8 Of The Best Chevrolet Corvettes sold (2)

American performance cars are an enticing prospect for many enthusiasts, often courtesy of a signature blend of exhilarating pace, muscular styling, and an intoxicating V8 soundtrack.

The subject of this round-up even holds the claim of being the world’s longest-running, continuously produced passenger car nameplate. It’s a model that has shifted with the times, but has remained perhaps the definitive American sports car for over 70 years: it is, of course, the Chevrolet Corvette.

From its introduction in 1953 all the way to its latest mid-engined iteration, the Corvette has transitioned from elegant roadster into a supercar-baiting performance icon. Below we explore eight of the best examples sold on Collecting Cars, covering every generation from C1 to C8.

1961 Chevrolet Corvette (C1)

Comprehensively restored, with just 48,622 miles from new, this C1-era flagship 1961 Corvette featured a 5.3-litre V8 and was finished in a stylish two-tone Tuxedo Black and Silver paint scheme, with a striking red leather-trimmed interior. Presented in generally superb condition, the car was also accompanied by its original numbers-matching engine block and heads.

Once displayed at the Malta Classic Car Museum, it was offered freshly imported to the UK, and was simply awaiting its registration paperwork. Over the course of its seven-day auction, the car received 37 bids, and was secured by its new keeper with a hammer price of £65,000.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette (C2) Sting Ray Coupe Split Window

Offered for sale in August 2023, this 1963 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe Split Window was a tastefully specified, early example of the desirable sports car. Originally manufactured in Chevrolet’s St Louis, Missouri plant, the car was noted to have been owned by a judge for the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) for 40 years during its time in the US.

Previously restored and repainted in its original colour of Daytona Blue, this Corvette still featured its numbers-matching 327-cubic inch (5.4-litre) small black V8, coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. This sought-after ‘split window’ example made for a hotly contested consignment, and it sold with an impressive hammer price of €124,550.

1972 Chevrolet Corvette (C3) Stingray

From an original C2 to a C3-generation model with a selection of desirable performance modifications under the skin; this excellent, previously restored Corvette now featured a 6.2-litre (383-cubic inch) GM ZZ1 V8 crate engine fed by an Edelbrock carburettor, reported to deliver 425bhp to the rear wheels via a four-speed ‘70R4’ automatic transmission with overdrive.

Imported and first registered in the UK in October 2014, it was offered for sale in May 2022 by its first and only private owner since arriving in the country. Alongside the larger V8 engine, the car was also enhanced with Wilwood brakes, Hedman tubular headers coupled to a Flowmaster performance exhaust system, and uprated suspension dampers. It was ready to be enjoyed immediately, and sold with a winning bid of £35,000.

1988 Chevrolet Corvette (C4) Callaway Twin Turbo

If subtle modification wasn’t sufficient, this 1988 Corvette Callaway Twin Turbo could have been just the ticket. Offered for sale in September 2021 by the Collecting Cars team in the US, it was a rare, powerful and visually striking example of the C4-generation sports car.

In Callaway guise, the standard iron-block 5.7-litre V8 was reworked and fitted with twin turbochargers as well as dual intercoolers. The result was a seriously impressive output of 390hp and 570lb-ft of torque sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox.

Alongside the performance upgrade, this Callaway Twin Turbo was also fitted with special 17-inch alloy wheels, and the sought-after AeroBody package - as seen on the legendary ‘Sledgehammer’ car. Boasting trophy-winning provenance and just 22,900 miles from new, it clocked up more than 10,000 views and sold for US$40,750.

2000 Chevrolet Corvette (C5) Z06

Another visually striking Corvette was offered for sale in December 2021 in the form of this year 2000 model. A well-maintained car, it featured the desirable Z06 Performance Package, incorporating a tuned version of the 5.7-litre V8 engine delivering 385bhp to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. There was also the Z06-specific titanium exhaust system, thinner glass, lighter wheels, reduced sound-proofing, and uprated suspension.

Finished in the eye-catching shade of Millennium Yellow, over a black leather-trimmed interior, it was presented at the time of sale in very good order, and with a well-documented service history since 2010. It was secured by its new enthusiast owner for £19,600.

2013 Chevrolet Corvette (C6) Z06 427 Convertible Collector’s Edition

Brought to market by the Collecting Cars team in Australia in September 2022, this special-edition 2013 Corvette Z06 was a rare and thrilling C6-generation convertible. Offered with only two owners from new and very low mileage, its 427-cubic inch (7.0-litre) LS7 V8 delivered 505bhp to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Understood to be one of only around 1,000 examples equipped with the 60th Anniversary package, and one of only 691 also ordered with the Heritage Package, this C6-era Z06 427 Convertible also featured a number of desirable carbon-fibre trim elements.

It had been converted to right-hand drive for enhanced usability, and was presented in generally excellent order at the time of sale. Boasting an exclusive factory colour scheme and specification, it attracted strong bidding, selling after 92 bids for A$130,000.

2018 Chevrolet Corvette (C7) ZR1 Convertible

Supercar performance deserves a supercar-style specification, and that’s just what this 2018 Corvette ZR1 Convertible offered. Brought to market in January 2021, this American powerhouse was offered by its first and only owner from new. Up front, the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 produced a mighty 745bhp and 715lb-ft of torque, delivering a claimed top speed of 202mph.

The visual drama was courtesy of the Sebring Orange Design Package, alongside the optional Performance Package that added an aggressive carbon-fibre front splitter, a substantial and adjustable rear wing, and the Magnetic Ride Control System.

Imported into the UK as a brand-new car and registered in December 2018, this Corvette ZR1 Convertible had been driven sparingly and showed just 1,700 miles from new. An ideal choice for any enthusiast looking to stand out from the crowd; the hammer fell at £90,500.

2021 Chevrolet Corvette (C8) 2LT Coupe

Rounding out this list is a stunning ‘as-new’ example of the latest generation model. This C8-era 2021 Corvette 2LT Coupe was offered for sale in March 2022, and represented an excellent opportunity for an enthusiast to beat the waiting list for a factory build.

A factory right-hand-drive model finished in the sleek shade of Jet Black over an Adrenaline Red leather-trimmed cabin; it had covered just 483 Kms at the time of sale. The car was also equipped with the desirable Z51 Performance Package and luxurious 2LT trim level. During its time on Collecting Cars, it attracted over 9,000 views, and was secured with a winning bid of A$231,000.
