1975 Porsche 930 Turbo auction highlight (2)

While Porsche is by its very nature a sought-after marque, there are variants within its back catalogue that stand out to collectors are being especially prized. The 911 Turbo model line has produced some incredible machines, and the earliest 930 Turbo is highly desirable given its ‘genesis point’ status. However, even more collectible within that generation are the cars built in the first year of production – and one such example is this week’s Auction Highlight.

This 1975 Porsche 911 Turbo was a stunning, fully restored example of the iconic classic performance car. Brought to market by the Collecting Cars team in Australia in February 2021, this striking coupe was manufactured and first registered in 1975, and was an original Australia ‘tourist delivery’ model, later handed over in February 1977 with 106 Kms on the clock.

Number 85 of just 284 examples built in the first year of production; it was even rarer given it was believed to be one of only six such examples delivered new to Australia, and one of just 18 right-hand-drive ‘first year’ cars.

At the time of sale the car had been with the seller for five years, during which time it had undergone a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration, returning this 930 Turbo to pristine condition. Not only that, but this example was finished in striking Emerald Green Metallic, complemented by Terracotta leather upholstery. The quality of the refurbishment was evident throughout, though the main controls, switches and driver’s door mirror had been carefully preserved.

Presented with a spare wheel, a Porsche tool kit, an air compressor, and a collection of original documentation, this 1975 Porsche 930 Turbo represented a very rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional example of the famed turbocharged sports car.

Boasting an instantly recognisable silhouette, and characterful performance from its turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six engine, this stand-out example attracted great interest during its time on Collecting Cars, with more than 70 bids placed, and it was secured by the new owner with a winning bid of A$410,000 – then a record price for a right-hand-drive model.
