An auction is an ideal sales route when you have a one-of-a-kind car to offer, because bidders can be extremely competitive at the risk of losing out – and the auction can attract widespread media attention.

So it was with the Aston Martin DB5 project just sold on Collecting Cars. While other DB5s have previously come to market in ‘barn find’ condition elsewhere, this particular car was notable for having the major restoration work already completed – including a complete bodywork restoration and total engine rebuild.

Our in-house marketing team packaged the consignment with the theme of ‘build your own Bond car’, and secured national press interest, being featured in the Daily TelegraphDaily Mail and Tatler, as well as specialist media such as Hagerty – where it was described “the world’s best Airfix kit”.

This major media coverage helped to bring more than 22,500 viewers to the 7-day auction, and triggered a bidding war in the closing hours and minutes. The car eventually sold more than 25% above reserve, with a winning bid of £416,900. Perhaps more remarkably, the buyer’s premium equated to just 1.4%.
