2017 BMW M140i SHADOW EDITION

This BMW M140i is a fine example of the premium rear-wheel-drive hot hatch, which offers a compelling blend of superb performance and everyday practicality. Featuring a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine producing 335bhp and 369lb-ft of torque, this car is equipped with the eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox with paddle shifters, allowing it to sprint from 0-60mph in just 4.6 seconds. The odometer displays 31,150 miles from new.

First registered on 6 October 2017, this five-door M140i was specified with the Shadow Edition trim package, which includes darkened LED headlights and smoked rear lights, plus black kidney grilles and exhaust finishers.

As well as its cosmetic enhancements, the Shadow Edition is also fitted with a number of usually optional items as standard, including rear parking sensors, a premium Harman/Kardon sound system, sun protection glass and cruise control. This modern performance hatchback is now offered for sale by its current and second owner from new, who acquired it in June 2018.

Ordered in the vibrant factory hue of Esotril Blue, this BMW’s bodywork presents well, with only a minor dent on both the offside and nearside rear quarter panels, which should be relatively straightforward to repair, if required. The paintwork remains in great shape, though the seller notes that there is a small mark on the lip of the rear bumper, caused by an attempt to fit a bicycle in the boot. There are also a few minor stone chips on the front bumper. The car rides on its original Orbit Grey ‘Style 436M’ alloy wheels, which present well, with one small kerb scratch on the nearside front rim.

In the cabin, the black leather upholstery is in very good order, with no wear or marks reported by the seller. Touchpoints including the leather-trimmed ‘M’ steering wheel, door pulls and iDrive controller are free of damage or discolouration, and the silver accents which break up the otherwise dark interior are similarly blemish-free.

Factory-fitted equipment includes dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a premium Harman/Kardon sound system. The seller reports no faults with any of the car’s buttons, switches or electrical items, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

This M140i’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out at 28,000 miles by Bangor Tyre Services, which performed a minor service including a brake fluid change. The vendor states that the engine oil and filter were also replaced as precaution, although they weren’t due to be changed until September 2021 based on BMW’s service schedule. Prior to this, Bangor Tyre Services carried out the car’s first major service at approximately 15,000 miles.

The car’s first and most recent MOT test was conducted on 22 September 2020 at 28,895 miles, which it passed first time, with advisories noting that the edges of all four tyres were worn close to the legal limit, and that a child seat was fitted to the nearside rear seat, preventing the seatbelt from being fully inspected.

Last replaced in March 2019, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres are reported to have a reasonable level of tread across the centres, though per the MOT last year, they evidently have more noticeable wear to the edges. All four tyres will be replaced by the seller prior to handover to the next owner.

In a time where smaller capacity engines and front- or all-wheel drive are becoming commonplace among hot hatches, BMW’s M140i stands apart from the crowd, thanks to its rear-wheel-drive platform and 3.0-litre straight-six power. Presented in very good condition throughout and specified in an appealing colour combination, this five-door example offers exciting driving dynamics and impressive practicality, making it an appealing and reliable daily driver or weekend toy alike.
