2017 BMW (F10) M5 COMPETITION EDITION 1/200

This BMW M5 Competition Edition is a potent yet practical super saloon, representing one of just 200 units built, and presented with fastidious maintenance history – including the all-important 1,200 mile service for M vehicles as recommended by BMW. Under the bonnet is a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8, driving the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with paddle shift. The odometer shows 34,684 miles from new.

Taking the already impressive F10 generation M5, the Competition Edition featured not only a significant power and torque hike - cutting the 0-62mph time to just 3.9 seconds - but added the M Competition Package into the mix. This comprises thicker anti-roll bars, stiffer springs and dampers, and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. It was offered only in Carbon Black or, as with this car, Mineral White. Its bodywork is accented by a BMW M Performance carbon-fibre rear spoiler, rear diffuser and mirror caps, as well as a gloss black kidney grille surround. It is believed that only 20 Competition Edition cars were delivered new to the UK, making this an extremely rare and collectable car.

The Competition Edition also incorporated a raft of desirable options as standard, including the Comfort Access package, front and rear heated seats, an electric rear sunblind, Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a power opening and closing boot lid. It was also given adaptive LED headlights and a reversing camera.

First registered on 17 March 2017, and with a total new price of £109,000, this UK-market car has two previous keepers on the log book and was acquired by the current owner in May 2019. This British resident spends a significant amount of time working in the Netherlands, which is where it temporarily resides - but this remains a UK-registered car, and will be shipped back to the UK after the auction.

Not content with the prodigious power of this factory-built special edition, the car has had its ECUs remapped by leading tuning specialist DMS Automotive, so that it now produces around 750bhp and 850Nm of torque. It can now sprint from 0-62mph in just 3 seconds, and its limiter has been removed so that it can carry on to 215mph. If the next owner prefers, this remap can be swapped back to the original factory calibration free of charge.

Its bodywork and paint present in excellent condition, having never been raced or tracked. The car was professionally detailed just two weeks ago, and the company reported that the paintwork was like that of a new car, no doubt helped by the protective coating on the finish. To continue the theme of the factory-fitted Shadow Line trim, this car’s side skirts, door handle inserts, front wing vents, and rear bumper panel have all been wrapped in gloss black vinyl. Furthermore, the rear lights and both front and rear badges have been tint wrapped, and the roof is wrapped in satin black - though of course all of this is reversible. It rides on the original 20-inch alloys, which have just one very small scuff on the nearside front wheel.

Stepping inside, the occupants are greeted by full black Merino leather upholstery, which is accented by contrasting Opal White stitching throughout - and which is unique to the Competition Edition car. The M5 logo is also embroidered into the front headrests, and Opal White is also used for the binding on the anthracite floor mats. All of the trim is in superb condition, commensurate with the low mileage and careful use. Carbon-fibre is also used for the cabin trim inlays, while it is packed with comfort and convenience equipment, detailed in the full list below. There are no electrical faults, and no warning lights on the dashboard.

Fastidiously maintained from new, this M5 comes with comprehensive annual service history, with the most recent main dealer visit in January 2020 at 22,717 miles. A full summary is included below, but the next service is not due for another 6,000 miles or until February 2021 - whichever is soonest.

Its first MOT test was carried out on 27 July 2020 at 28,856 miles (recorded as 46,439 km, as the owner had switched the electronic display to kilometres for continental driving). This was a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. The wheels are shod in high-performance Pirelli P Zero tyres on all four corners, with the vendor noting that the rear tyres were replaced less than 1,000 miles ago.

Accompanying the car is the owner’s handbook, full service history record - which is also confirmed by the car’s electronic readout - both of the original keys, and the tool kit in the boot, which has never been used. The car is also fitted with a Category 5 alarm tracking system, connected to an App and a 24-hour monitoring service. This requires a subscription, which expires in May 2021, and costs around £165 per year to renew.

This BMW M5 Competition Edition is a remarkably rare high-performance saloon, boasting a huge specification, and presented in superb condition throughout. While this car has a few discreet cosmetic changes, not to mention a sledgehammer power output, all of these bespoke revisions are reversible should the next owner desire. For someone seeking family transport with four doors but also with supercar-baiting pace, this modern classic must surely be on the shortlist. It would make a great addition to any garage, and is truly thrilling to drive on the road.
