2010 BMW (E92) M3 COMPETITION PACK

This BMW M3 Competition is a very well-presented example of a superb contemporary performance car, in a rare factory specification. It is powered by the 414bhp 4.0-litre S65 V8 - named by Evo magazine as “one of the greatest naturally aspirated engines ever made” - and in this case is driven through an involving six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 40,135 miles from new.

First registered on 26 November 2010, and supplied by Dick Lovett BMW in Hungerford, there are three previous registered keepers on the log book. The current owner acquired the car three years ago. It is understood that this is one of only 22 E92 Competition Package cars in the UK that were specified with the manual gearbox. In 2018, it was used in a CAR magazine feature in a twin test with the new M4 Competition, and has also been featured on PistonHeads as a ‘Readers’ Car of the Week’.

Today, the bodywork presents in superb condition. The seller reports that there are no dents, scratches, rust, or unsightly paint repairs on the car. Its Space Grey metallic finish is in great shape, with a small number of stone chips around the front, which are highlighted in the photo gallery below. Its original CSL-style wheels have a few minor chips and blemishes, and a small area of lifted paint around the centre cap on one wheel.

The exterior is enhanced with the genuine BMW M Performance carbon-fibre boot lid spoiler, front bumper corner splitters, and the gloss black M Performance kidney grilles. Its OEM exhaust has also received the popular ‘two-pipe’ modification, which the seller states does not intrude or create unwanted drone, but simply increases the level of bass notes to the same level as an M Performance exhaust system.

Inside, the Fox Red leather is in good order, and was specified from the factory with the extended leather option. All of the leather still has a fresh ‘matt’ appearance. The driver’s seat bolster does have some minor scuffs, which do little to detract from the otherwise smartly presented cabin, and could easily be re-connolised. The plastic inlay on top of the gear knob is starting to show some wear, though the gear knob itself is in great shape - as is the leather-trimmed steering wheel and its tri-colour M stitching.

Last serviced in October 2019 at 39,866 miles, this was carried out by Harry Fairbairn BMW in Kirkcaldy, and consisted of a standard full vehicle inspection as well as renewal of the brake fluid. Prior to this, it was serviced in June 2017 at 32,089 miles, and in October 2016 at 29,569 miles - both at Lloyds South Lakes BMW. In September 2018, the throttle actuator was replaced at Harry Fairbairn BMW, and in February 2018 it had a new ABS sensor and EDC module, fitted by John Clark BMW.

The seller notes that there is a replacement BMC air filter element inside the OEM airbox, which is fully reversible. If required, he can supply the original air filter with the car. He also notes that the oil has been changed in his ownership even more frequently than the BMW service schedule recommends, using the correct oil and filter.

The most recent MOT test was on 29 November 2019 at 40,033 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories. The tyres are matching Michelin Pilot Sport 4S items that were fitted in September 2018, and which have subsequently covered around 3,000 miles. The tread depths were measured approximately 400 miles ago at 6.5mm all round.

Accompanying this BMW is the original M book wallet, with all original literature and handbooks. There is a stamped BMW service history booklet showing each service, including the important running-in service at 822 miles. In addition to this, there is a separate A4 folder which contains various invoices and receipts from the life of the car, along with the MOT history. The original first aid kit and tyre inflator remain unused and stored in the boot, and a set of BMW floor mats is presented.

This BMW M3 Competition is an excellent example of the first and last V8-engined model. Equipped with a manual gearbox, this car is certainly a rarity - and given its unusual colour scheme, it is likely unique. The high-revving naturally aspirated V8 makes this a thrill to drive, and this particular car features subtle enhancements to further improve the experience from behind the wheel.
