2004 PORSCHE 911 (996) CARRERA 4S

This 996-generation Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is a sought-after modern classic, benefitting from a recent IMS bearing upgrade. Under the rear engine cover is the 315bhp naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat-six, which powers all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays 84,471 miles from new.

First registered in October 2004, this 996-generation Carrera 4S was specified with Basalt Black metallic paintwork over a black full leather interior, with Porsche crests embossed on the seats’ headrests. Optional equipment includes auto-dimming interior and door mirrors, headlamp washers, a rear window wiper, and heated and electrically adjustable front seats.

Its logbook shows three prior keepers, and the car was placed in storage from 2016 until June 2020, when it was acquired by the current owner. On taking delivery, they had the car inspected by Porsche specialist RPM Technik, which carried out a general service and replaced a number of its mechanical components, as well as fitting an upgraded IMS bearing.

Today, this 911’s bodywork presents very well indeed, with no evidence of any prior accident damage or dents to any of its panels, though its recent inspection revealed that there is some damage to the front tub. Its Basalt Black metallic finish is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition, with a few light scratches to its surface. The front bumper, driver’s-side rear wheel arch and rear bumper have been resprayed in the past year. The car rides on its original set of 18-inch alloy wheels, which are in great shape, with only a few very minor blemishes on their surfaces.

Inside, this Porsche’s cabin is clad in full black leather, which covers the seats, door cards and dashboard. Both of the heated and electrically adjustable seats are in good order, with some general signs of wear and creasing to their upholstery and scuffs on their plastic backs, in line with the car’s age and mileage. Elsewhere, the interior trim presents well, though there is a small scuff on the far right-hand side of the lower dashboard and minor scratches on both of the door cards and the plastic transmission tunnel cover.

Thanks to the addition of a Porsche Classic Communication System Plus infotainment system, this mid-2000s sports car now offers a number of modern-day amenities, including DAB+, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All of the car’s buttons, switches and electrical items work as they should, and there are no warning lights present.

Having recently been reconditioned and serviced by Porsche specialist RPM Technik in June 2020 at a cost of nearly £5,000, this 911 is in excellent mechanical order. Carried out nearly 3,000 miles ago, the work included the fitment of an upgraded IMS bearing, replacement of the clutch, and new rear brake discs and pads. Prior to this, in 2019, Porsche specialist Charles Ivey carried out a full service and replaced the front brake discs and pads, as well as fitting a new sports exhaust system.

As shown in RPM Technik’s June 2020 inspection, both of the suspension system’s front top mounts are in need of replacement, along with the nearside rear top mount bush, its control arm bushes , and the rear toe arm. During the vendor’s ownership, the car has been fitted with a Metatrak Category 5 tracker system and its stereo has been upgraded, as mentioned above.

This 911’s latest MOT test was conducted on 24 June 2020 at 81,678 miles, which it passed with no advisories after a corroded offside rear brake pipe was replaced and an issue with the bonnet latch was rectified. All four of its wheels are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, which the seller states are nearly new, and have ample usable tread remaining.

The car will be accompanied by its original book pack, including its driver’s manual and quick reference guide, which are contained in the correct leather document folder. Its service book will also be included, plus an invoice detailing its recent service and IMS bearing upgrade.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is a fine example of the surefooted 996-generation sports car. While its suspension components require some straightforward attention, it is otherwise reported to be in good mechanical and cosmetic order, and should prove to be a reliable and entertaining addition to any collection.
