RESERVE LOWERED: 2003 BMW (E46) M3 CSL - LHD

This 2003 BMW M3 CSL is a very well-presented example of the limited-run zenith of the E46 generation. Powered by a 3.2-litre S54 naturally-aspirated straight-six producing 350bhp, its performance is marshalled by a six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with paddle shifters. The odometer reads just 64,347km (39,983 miles) from new.

First delivered new to the Swiss market, this CSL was later sold to a Swedish collector, where it has spent the majority of its life in his care. The M3 was formally registered on 1 January 2005. It is now located in Denmark, and has been with the current owner for the last two years.

This car is understood to be one of only 303 left-hand drive cars finished in Sapphire Black metallic. Furthermore, it is one of only one of 101 left-hand drive CSLs to be sold new with the top speed limiter removed – a rare option only available to those who produced a valid racing licence to prove to BMW that they had sufficient skills behind the wheel.

As you would hope with such a landmark car, this CSL is reported to have superb original bodywork, with no panel damage or dents to be seen, including on the ‘ducktail’ rear spoiler. The carbon-fibre additions unique to the model, including the front lip spoiler, rear diffuser and roof panel, exhibit no lacquer damage, cracks or imperfections.

Finished in Black Sapphire metallic, the paintwork retains its alluring deep hue, and is in excellent order throughout. The seller notes minor stone chips to the front, commensurate with considerate road use. Also unique to the CSL are the 19-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, which exhibit very minor signs of kerbing, which could be easily remedied with professional refurbishment.

The interior is an attractive mix of elegant BMW styling and track-inspired functionality. The seats are finished in Amaretta synthetic suede with anthracite Reflex centre panelling on the doors, which presents in excellent order. The door cards and centre console inlays are finished in carbon-fibre, which have no scratches or damage.

Last serviced in March 2020 by BMW Denmark at 62,182km, this consisted of an annual oil and filter service. Prior to this, services were carried out at 57,764km and 54,212km at Häggenäs Automobile in Sweden, with both including renewal of the engine oil and filter, and the latter also involving an Inspection II service.

The CSL’s last Danish ‘Bilsyn’ test – comparable to a UK MOT – was carried out in May 2019. No advisories were noted at this time. Under the Danish system, the next test is not required until May 2021. The wheels are shod with a matching set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres all round, which the seller reports are in excellent condition with ample tread depth remaining.

This naturally-aspirated performance car will reach its next owner with all original BMW handbooks, and stamped service history. In addition, two keys – plus emergency spare – and the original BMW towing eye and air compressor will be provided.

This E46-era M3 CSL is a well-maintained and original example of perhaps the pinnacle of straight-six M3s. It would be a strong candidate to join any collection of modern classics, though it is ultimately ready to be relished on the open road.
