2000 BMW Z3 M ROADSTER

This BMW Z3M Roadster is a high-performance version of a modern classic sports car, presented in superb condition throughout. A significant step up from the standard Z3, the M Roadster is powered by a 3.2-litre straight-six, producing 316bhp and 258lb-ft of torque. It is coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox, and can sprint from 0-62mph in just over five seconds. The odometer indicates 63,600 miles from new.

Initially unveiled in 1995, the BMW Z3 won over buyers with its approachability and retro styling cues, but some felt that its performance was lacking.

In response, BMW’s M division elevated the car to a new level in 1997 with the creation of the Z3M. Featuring the S50 engine from the then contemporary E36 M3, its power output was more than 100bhp higher than the standard Z3’s, while a wider rear track and stretched rear arches accommodated girthier tyres, greatly enhancing grip. Further enhancing the driving experience, the Z3M was fitted with a limited-slip differential, while larger brakes helped to keep things in check.

First registered on 25 May 2000, this Z3 M was supplied to its original owner in Ireland, changing hands once before being sold and shipped to its third, UK-based keeper in 2018. Its second owner here acquired the car in August 2019, and it is now being offered for sale by the trade.

Today, the handsome bodywork remains in great shape, and has never suffered any accident damage, as detailed in an independent report which was carried out in 2018.

The metallic Cosmos Black paintwork also presents very well, with the vendor noting that the front bumper and bonnet have both been resprayed to correct some previously acquired stone chips. As a result, the paint is now smooth and glossy across the entire body and is free of any substantial marks or blemishes. The car rides on its original 17-inch five-spoke ‘Style 40’ alloy wheels, which are in excellent overall condition, with just some minor kerb grazes on the outer rims in a few places.

Its black fabric convertible hood is in good order, fitting snugly over its frame, and free of any rips or tears. There is, however, a small split in the flexible rear window, but the seller states that it is still watertight, and has not split all the way through to the interior. The car is also supplied with a rare matching factory hard top, bringing an extra touch of refinement while also enhancing this Roadster’s year-round usability.

In the cabin, black and grey leather have been applied to the dashboard, door cards and seats, creating a two-tone appearance. Overall, the upholstery is in fair order for its age and mileage. There are signs of wear on both seats and a very small tear to the right-hand side of the passenger seat base, but in general the interior still looks smart.

Factory-fitted equipment includes air-conditioning and heated seats, with the seller also noting that the car is fitted with an alarm and remote central locking. The original BMW stereo head unit has been replaced with an aftermarket Pioneer unit, complete with USB and aux inputs, bringing a modern touch to the interior. The analogue clock dial is currently not functioning, but there are no other reported faults with any of the cabin’s buttons, switches and electrical items.

This Z3M Roadster was last serviced on 1 April 2018 at 62,850 miles by Bespoke Motors of Sligo, Ireland, which carried out an oil service and replaced the micro-filter element. Prior to this, its most recent maintenance was an Inspection II service in February 2017 at 62,151 miles. The car has also benefitted from an overhaul of its VANOS system in July 2017, and a replacement clutch in 2006 at 53,836 miles.

Its most recent MOT test was on 5 November 2019 at 63,301 miles, which it passed after the exhaust sensors were replaced, with only one advisory notice being issued for some wear to one of the front brake discs, due to a relative lack of use. All four wheels are shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, which were fitted in 2016 and remain in good condition, with 7mm of tread remaining on each.

Accompanying the car are all of its original handbooks and the stamped service record, plus Irish NCT and UK MOT certificates, and various invoices detailing the car’s history. There is also a full independent report that was carried out for the seller in August 2019 at 62,942 miles, just before they bought it. The car also features its full tool kit and the vendor is including the hard top in the sale as mentioned above.

This BMW Z3 M Roadster is a lesser-seen modern classic sports car. Well cared-for over the years, its bodywork and mechanical underpinnings are in very good order, making this a Roadster that looks superb and drives smartly. It would make a fine addition to any collection, and will surely delight its owner whenever they choose to unleash its performance.
