1999 PORSCHE 911 (996) CARRERA 2

KEY FACTS

  • A smart and usable example of the 996-generation sports car, presented in a handsome factory colour scheme and benefitting from a comprehensive Hartech engine rebuild and an IMS bearing upgrade.
  • Under the rear engine cover is the naturally aspirated 3.4-litre flat-six, which drives the rear wheels via an engaging six-speed manual transmission.
  • An original C16-code UK-market car, this 996 was first registered in December 1999 and was acquired by the seller four years ago.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This pre-facelift Carrera is finished in Arctic Silver with contrasting dark Metropole Blue leather upholstery.
  • Factory-fitted equipment includes Litronic (xenon) headlights, an electric sliding sunroof, heated sport seats, cruise control, and carbon-fibre inserts on the gear knob and handbrake grip.
  • The car rides on its original set of 18-inch ‘Turbo Twist’ alloy wheels, which are in very good condition, with only one small blemish on the rim of the front passenger-side wheel.
  • As mentioned above, the engine has been fully rebuilt, when it was fitted with new liners and a more robust M97 single-row IMS bearing.
  • The brake discs and pads were changed in August 2020, and all four tyres have recently been replaced with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 items.
  • Modifications include the fitment of Topgear stainless steel exhaust manifolds and silencers, a 997-generation GT3 RS gear shifter, GT3 front and rear brake ducts, an X51-style deep sump, and a low temperature thermostat.
  • The car will be supplied with all of its original manuals and handbooks, its stamped service book and a number of invoices for its past maintenance, as well as both keys and the original tool kit and spare wheel.

CONDITION

  • No known bodywork damage.
  • The paintwork is very smart overall, with a few minor blemishes including a 2cm scratch on the passenger-side of the rear bumper, as well as stone chips on the bonnet, door mirror caps and rear wheel arches, in line with the car’s age and mileage.
  • The front bumper has recently been repainted to remove a crack in its finish and various stone chips, and presents very well indeed.
  • The exterior trim is also in great shape, and a new OE Saint Gobain windscreen was fitted earlier this year.
  • Inside, the cabin shows a few general signs of use and wear, including creases on the front seats, scratches on the bonnet and engine lid release levers and various small marks on the seat backs, centre console and interior trim items.
  • There are no known mechanical or electrical faults, save for a potential issue with an internal alarm sensor, which causes the system to beep twice when being armed.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted 16 January 2021 at 74,823 miles, resulting in a clean, first-time pass.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 911’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in august 2020 at 75,589 miles by Porsche specialist DW Performance, who performed a major service including a brake fluid change, in addition to replacing the exhaust silencers, brake discs and pads, and three of the coil packs.
  • Prior to this, services were carried out by marque specialists RPM Technik in August 2018 and Precision Porsche in September 2016.
  • The engine was rebuilt in June 2017 by Porsche specialist Hartech after metallic particles were found in the oil during a routine service. While it was discovered that this was due to a damaged cam chain guide, the decision was made to upgrade the engine with all new liners and a robust M97 IMS bearing, as well as a low temperature thermostat and an X51-style deep baffled sump.
  • During the seller’s ownership the front brake caliper bleed screw has been repaired and the trackrods have been replaced, as well as the bonnet and engine lid struts.

SUMMARY

This 1999 Porsche 911 Carrera is an engaging, naturally aspirated driver’s car, which is made all the more involving thanks to its uprated 997 GT3 RS manual gear shifter. Maintained to a high standard and benefitting from a rebuilt engine with the more robust M97 IMS bearing, this 996 should make an exciting and reliable B-road companion, and could easily be pressed into service as a fun yet refined daily driver.
