1999 PORSCHE 911 (996) CARRERA

KEY FACTS

  • A rewarding analogue driver’s car, benefitting from a number of performance and cosmetic upgrades.
  • Under the engine lid is the 3.4-litre water-cooled flat-six, which has been modified and remapped to produce 315-320bhp. This drives the rear wheels via the desirable six-speed manual transmission.
  • As a 1999 model-year example, this example is one of the final Carreras to feature a cable-operated throttle and no traction control system.
  • During its time with the seller, this 911 has taken part in a number of European tours, and has also been enjoyed by a number of other enthusiasts via a classic car hire platform.

EQUIPMENT AND OPTIONS

  • A non-sunroof car, this 911 was specified in the timeless colour combination of Arctic Silver over an extended black leather interior with silver gauge surrounds, and a matching silver transmission tunnel.
  • Performance modifications carried out by marque specialist RPM Technik include a lightened flywheel, a switchable sports exhaust, an uprated intake plenum and a K&N intake filter. The ECU has also been remapped, and the engine now produces around 315-320bhp.
  • An RPM Technik CSR carbon-fibre bonnet has also been fitted, along with bronze ‘Carrera’ decals on the car’s flanks, a GT3-style bonnet decal and 18-inch GT3 split-rim alloy wheels with bronze centres.
  • This 911 will be accompanied by its original driver’s manual and stamped service book, which are contained in their correct wallet. The seller is also supplying a number of receipts for the car’s maintenance and modifications, as well as its tool kit and space-saver spare wheel. In the front boot are two 996 maintenance manuals/reference books, and spares including a new drive belt, lower suspension arms, and offside rear bearing.

CONDITION

  • Today, the bodywork presents very well, with the front wings and roof panel having been repaired after a tree branch fell on the car in 2018. While tending to the damage, RPM Technik replaced the bonnet with a carbon-fibre panel at the owner’s request, and a new windscreen was also fitted.
  • The seller also notes a plastic ‘winglet’ under the car ahead of the driver’s-side front wheel is loose, but currently tied on.
  • Overall, the Arctic Silver paintwork is in good order, and the bonnet, front wings and roof panel were resprayed following their replacement and repair in 2018. However, there are a few age-related marks around the car, including blemishes on the lower front bumper and stone chips on the door mirror covers, while the black trim around the front intakes would benefit from being repainted.
  • Featuring bronze centres with polished rims, the three-piece GT3 alloy wheels are in fair shape, but feature various marks and stone chips, and would benefit from refurbishment.
  • Inside, the cabin shows some general signs of use, including wear and creasing on the seat bolsters, scuffs on the bonnet and boot-release pulls, scratches on the door pulls and marks on both the leather-wrapped gear knob and handbrake grip.
  • While there is a six-disc CD changer mount in the boot, this is not currently connected. The vendor also states that the switchable sports exhaust is not functioning, which is believed to be due to a faulty solenoid or a sticking flange in the exhaust system.
  • The power steering hose is slightly corroded and the front brake discs will need to be replaced in the near future.
  • Aside from the above issues, there are no known electrical or mechanical faults, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 18 May 2021 at 82,727 miles, resulting in a first-time pass. There was one advisory for slight play in the nearside rear wheel bearing, but this has since been rectified with the axle nut tight and seated.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 996’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2019 at 79,722 miles by Porsche specialist RPM Technik. A 96,000-mile service, this included an oil, filter and spark plug change, as well as replacement of the drive belt, brake fluid and fuel filter.
  • Prior to this, the car was serviced in 2018, which included the all-important IMS upgrade, as well as the fitment of a new lightweight flywheel and clutch, an IPD plenum and a new rear main seal.
  • This 911 has benefitted from around £17,000 of repairs and maintenance in the last three years alone. During the last three months its rear brake discs, front and rear brake pads, nearside rear wheel bearing, nearside rear lower suspension and control arms and battery have also been replaced, before a full geometry set-up was carried out.

SUMMARY

Benefitting from a raft of cosmetic and performance enhancements, as well as an upgraded IMS bearing for added peace of mind, this focused sports car will make the ideal candidate for weekend blasts and long-distance tours alike, and is sure to excite its next owner at every twist and turn.
