1999 BMW Z3M COUPE

This 1999 BMW Z3 M Coupe is a superb, low-mileage example of the rare modern classic sports car, which is presented in a vibrant factory colour scheme. As a first-generation car, this coupe is powered by a 316bhp 3.2-litre ‘S50’ straight-six, which powers the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The odometer displays just 37,146 miles.

While early examples such as this feature the spectacular engine from the E36-generation BMW M3 Evolution, the Z3 M Coupe’s ‘shooting brake’ body design divided opinion at launch, resulting in relatively low sales. However, the car’s widely praised dynamics have since made it a sought-after collectable performance car, and something of a cult classic.

Understood to be one of just 821 right-hand drive ‘S50’ models built, this particular Z3 M was first registered in September 1999, and has been used sparingly and stored carefully throughout its life. There are only two previous keepers on the V5C, and the most recent private owner acquired it 14 years ago. The car is now offered for sale by the trade.

Today, this coupe’s idiosyncratic bodywork is in great shape, with straight panel gaps and no known prior damage. While the vendor cannot be sure if the Estoril Blue paintwork is original, it was not been repainted during the most recent 14-year ownership, and has a smooth appearance and high level of gloss across the entire car.

The light lenses and body trims are also in great shape, and the car rides on the correct 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, which have minor kerbing grazes on the nearside rear wheel, but are otherwise in good order.

Moving inside, this Z3 M’s cabin features two-tone Estoril Blue and black leather, which covers the seats, dashboard, door cards and centre console. While there are some minor signs of wear and creasing to the seat bolsters, this is commensurate with the car’s age, and there is no visible damage to speak of. Touchpoints including the M Sport steering wheel and gear knob are in excellent condition, and the other interior trims present well.

This lesser-seen German sports car is equipped with a glass sunroof, heated seats and air-conditioning. An aftermarket Pioneer digital radio and six-disc CD changer have also been installed; however, the vendor will also provide the original unit as part of the sale. All of the interior controls, switches and electrics currently work without fault, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

The car’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2019 at 37,051 miles by R.A. Services, which performed an Inspection II service, including replacement of the engine oil, all filters, the spark plugs, and the rear shock absorber top mounts. A new clutch slave cylinder was fitted in August 2020, and the vendor will also have the car serviced upon its sale.

Previous services were carried out in September 2018 at 36,947 miles and in December 2016 at 36,002 miles, when R.A. Services changed the car’s oil and filter, and replaced the brake fluid.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 19 August 2020 at 37,124 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with no advisories. Accompanying the car are all of its original handbooks, the stamped maintenance record and service history paperwork, the original tools and first aid kit, and two keys.

This BMW Z3 M Coupe is a highly original and well-presented example of what is perhaps the marque’s most esoteric modern performance car. With low mileage, a very good service history, and of course a thoroughly engaging engine and chassis, this rare car would be a credit to any collection, and is sure to impress its next owner on the road.
