This BMW Z3 M Coupe is a sought-after modern classic sports car, boasting low mileage and a smart factory colour combination. It is powered by the 316bhp 3.2-litre S50 straight-six, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed ZF manual transmission and limited-slip differential. The odometer shows just 29,027 miles from new.

The early M Coupe’s engine was sourced from the E36 generation BMW M3 Evolution, and was installed within a bespoke Z3 body of a ‘shooting brake’ design. Its unconventional styling meant that sales were relatively low, but the reception to its driving experience was superb. Over the last decade, the M Coupe has become a very collectable performance car.

This particular Z3 M is one of just 821 right-hand drive S50 models built. It was first registered in November 1999, and has just three previous registered keepers on the V5C log book. The owner acquired the car back in July 2020 in a Collecting Cars online auction, and is now offering it to another enthusiast to enjoy as he has simply not been able to use it as much as intended.

Its bodywork presents in excellent condition, with impressive shut lines all around the car. The Titan Silver finish is smooth and even, with no evident blemishes. The light lenses and body trims are all in great shape, and the door jambs and shut panels are also in good order. It rides on the correct five-spoke alloy wheels, which look superb, with no kerbing damage or paint chips.

In the cabin, the original seats are upholstered in a combination of Imola Red and black leather, and have very little wear to speak of - and certainly no damage. There are a few very small scuffs on the driver’s seat bolster, but in general the interior looks superb. It is equipped with heated seats, but was ordered without a sunroof, which appears to be a rare specification. The original stereo and CD player is also present.

Mechanically, the car is reported to be in very good order, still fresh from a recent oil service in April 2020 at 28,893 miles, carried out by Bell Sport and Classic in Hertfordshire. Prior to this it was serviced in March 2018 at 28,691 miles by Parkway Specialist Cars, which included Inspection I maintenance with renewal of the engine oil and filter, coolant, brake fluid, micro-filter element, and spark plugs. The valve clearances were also checked and adjusted. In February 2015 at 28,601 miles, it received an Inspection II service at Ridgeway BMW Bournemouth, and new boot lid struts were also fitted.

Its most recent MOT test was on 11 March 2020 at 28,847 miles, which it passed with only a few advisories and minor defects, including a chip to the windscreen outside the driver’s view, some perishing of the rear tyres, a non-excessive oil leak, and some deterioration of the exhaust silencer skins.

Accompanying the car is a complete book pack, including the stamped maintenance record and all user guides. The original tools first aid kit and tyre inflator are also present, along with a spare set of keys.

This BMW Z3 M Coupe is a great example of the marque’s idiosyncratic millennium-era sports car. Its engine and gearbox make it an exciting and engaging car to drive on the road, while the boot space makes it a genuinely practical performance car. Undoubtedly a smart and eye-catching modern classic, this would make a fine addition to any collection.
