1997 PORSCHE 911 (993) CARRERA S VESUVIO

This Porsche 993 Carrera S Vesuvio is a striking special edition of the final air-cooled 911, remaining highly original with low mileage, and benefiting from a major mechanical overhaul just a few years ago. Under the engine lid is a 282bhp ‘VarioRam’ 3.6-litre flat-six, which drives the rear wheels via the desirable six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 85,030 km.

The Carrera S was the ‘last hurrah’ for the 993 model, featuring the wide-arched body shell from the Turbo, as well as the revised front bumper and lower suspension, but paired with the naturally aspirated engine. This car represents an even rarer breed - the special ‘Vesuvio Edition’, which saw the Vesuvio Metallic paint joined by Steel Grey accents for the door mirror caps and the retro-style twin grille engine cover / rear spoiler. The gear knob, handbrake grip, and instrument bezels were also finished in Steel Grey, and this car specified with the 18-inch hollow-spoke ‘Technology’ alloys.

An original German-delivery car, this Porsche was first registered in April 1997, and it has been owned by the vendor for the last four years. It remains highly original, with the only modification noted being the addition of a Cargraphic sports exhaust system.

Today, this 993’s bodywork presents in superb condition. However, it was previously damaged by a fallen branch in 2006, which affected the front right side of the roof, and one of the side panels. The body was completely repaired by Porsche Centre Munich after this happened, and an invoice is available for the work. Having been partially resprayed in the past when the repairs were carried out, its Vesuvio Metallic finish presents very well. All four alloy wheels are in great shape, with no kerbing damage.

Inside, this Porsche is equipped with the sought-after heated sport seats, which evidently retain their original black leather upholstery. The driver’s seat has a small slit of just a few millimetres near the electric adjustment controls, but otherwise shows just some light creasing and surface wear commensurate with the mileage. The passenger seat has very little wear to speak of, and the rear seats appear to have been barely used at all. Its optional sunroof works correctly, and the original air-conditioning and CDR-21 stereo head unit are both in place. There are no known electrical faults.

Mechanically, this 993 is reported to be in excellent overall condition, having been subject to a significant service in June 2017. During this work, the engine was overhauled and resealed, and the transmission seals were also renewed. New OEM coilover suspension was installed, along with new bushings and other minor components, with the total bill coming to around €20,000. It is said to have only covered movement mileage since then, being carefully stored since the overhaul was completed.

This Porsche 993 Carrera S Vesuvio is not only a great example of the final air-cooled model, but also a rare special edition. It is also equipped with desirable features such as the heated composite sport seats, lightweight hollow-spoke wheels and factory air-conditioning. A car that is bound to appeal to serious marque collectors, this special 993 Carrera S is also a superb driver’s car that is ready to enjoy on the open road.
