1997 BMW ALPINA (E36) B3 3.2 SALOON

This Alpina B3 3.2 is a sound example of the rare 1990s performance saloon, presented in original condition and having featured in Total BMW magazine. Under the bonnet is a 3.2-litre, naturally-aspirated straight-six engine producing around 265bhp and 243lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels via a five-speed Switchtronic automatic transmission, with steering wheel shift buttons.

First registered on 16 December 1997, this example is offered by sale by its current owner, who has had the Alpina since November 2011. While the HPI record indicates the car was previously registered overseas, this is very common for Alpina builds, which were often collected at the factory. It is believed to be one of only four UK right-hand drive E36 Alpina B3 3.2 saloons, and has benefited from notable maintenance and new parts in recent years.

Finished in metallic black, the Alpina cuts an understated figure compared to the performance saloons of today. The vendor states that the left front wing and leading edge of the bonnet have previously been repaired, along with its rear arches to address corrosion in the past. The boxy front end has some scratches and stone chips, but nothing untoward for a car of its age. It rides on the iconic multi-spoke 17-inch Alpina alloys.

Inside, the Alpina’s grey leather upholstery shows signs of age-related patina to the door handle grabs and both front seats. A pinhole tear is also present on the driver’s seat, while the Alpina three-spoke steering wheel exhibits signs of wear. The vendor adds that no warning lights are illuminated on the dashboard, but that some pixels on the check control panel have failed. The electric aerial is also currently inoperative, though there are no other known electrical faults.

The car is currently having a minor service, as well as a coolant change, and fitment of new front indicator bulbs, reconnection of a front headlamp washer jet, and a new bonnet release at CFS Bristol. Prior to this, it was also seen by CFS Bristol in October 2016. This was a major service with a coolant flush and brake fluid change carried out alongside an oil change. During the vendor’s ownership, many parts have been replaced or refurbished. A new radiator was fitted in 2012, while new Bilstein B12 coil-over suspension was fitted in December 2020. The front brake calipers were professionally reconditioned with a warranty valid until December 2022, while the air-conditioning compressor was replaced in 2019.

In August 2019, the rear inner sill and nearside rear wheel arch were treated for rust with cavity wax paint. In June of the same year, corrosion patches on the front doors, offside sill and offside rear wheel arch were all repaired.

The most recent MOT test was on 13 December 2020 at 106,553 miles. This was a first-time pass, with advisories for a minor power steering fluid leak, as well as fading apparent on both front indicator bulbs. There are Kumho tyres on the front axle and Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres at the rear, and all have around 6mm of tread.

This Alpina B3 3.2 is a chance to acquire a rare and understated performance saloon. With a little cosmetic attention, it could be brought up to a very impressive standard, or it could be enjoyed with its current level of patina as a compelling weekend toy or unusual daily driver.
