1995 PORSCHE 968 SPORT

KEY FACTS

  • A very smart example of a C16 UK-only 968 Sport which has been extensively refurbished over the course of the last three years.
  • Under the bonnet is the all-aluminium 3.0-litre inline-four, which produces 237bhp and drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
  • Over the course of the past three years the seller has invested more than £10,000 in the car to bring it up to an excellent standard.
  • Understood to be one of just 306 examples of the UK-only 968 Sport sold by Porsche Cars GB between 1993 and 1995.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Every 968 Sport started life as a Club Sport on the Zuffenhausen production line, with Porsche Cars GB specifying a number of choice extras from the CS options list as the ‘UK Luxury Pack’. These included electric windows and mirrors, electric sunroof, central locking and alarm, the CS comfort front seats, rear seats with an electric tailgate release and, finally, the rear badge delete.
  • On arrival into the UK, Porsche GB added a neat ‘Sport’ badge to the rear of the car. It was described in the original UK brochure as “the soul of the 968 Club Sport with added comfort and convenience”.
  • Driven back to back, it would be almost impossible to tell the difference between a 968 Sport and the now more valuable 968 Club Sport as they share the same CS chassis. The 968 Club Sport is renowned as being one of the best handling cars of its generation, with Walter Röhrl quoted on several occasions that the 968 Club Sport was the best handling car Porsche had ever produced.
  • This example was specified with black paintwork and black cloth upholstery, and rides on the correct set of 17-inch Cup 2 alloy wheels, which were professionally refurbished in January 2021 and are pristine.
  • The car has been subtly enhanced with a number of additional Club Sport parts, including the unique CS boot net, radio delete panel, Club Sport rear badges and red side decals - though these could easily be removed should the buyer wish to return the car to its original specification.
  • Furthermore, it has been modified with the addition of a stainless-steel Janspeed cat-back exhaust system and a Promax ECU for smoother power delivery, however the original parts will also be included with the car, along with its Blaupunkt RCR42 Paris radio/cassette player and the original Sport boot badge. The owner mentions that the exhaust makes a subtle but satisfying improvement over the standard exhaust system. 968 aficionados will recognise the Promax ECU as a ‘must have’ upgrade with the vendor noting neither upgrade has affected the insurance premium.
  • This 968 Sport will be accompanied by two original keys and immobiliser fobs. There are two stamped service books, a substantial and chronologically ordered folder of invoices for its past maintenance, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the original press release, brochure, price list and a number of its old tax discs.
  • All seven previous owners are documented with the third being a knighted individual who owned and garaged the car for nearly 10 years.
  • The seller is also providing a Classic Editions black, soft stretch indoor car cover, along with the correct sunroof bag, boot cover, complete tool kit, unused spare wheel and tyre compressor.

CONDITION

  • The seller believes that the passenger-side front wing was replaced approximately six years ago, as the original panel was damaged when the car was parked; however, the work was evidently carried out to a very high standard.
  • Today, there is no visible damage to the bodywork, and the car remains HPI clear.
  • Overall, the black paintwork is in very good condition, with a few small age-related blemishes including age-appropriate stone chips and light scratches on the bonnet, a touched-in stone chip on the driver’s-side door mirror cover and additional touched-in marks on the passenger-side quarter panel.
  • The exterior trim is also in great shape, and the side skirt rubbers, door handle gaskets, side repeater lenses have all been replaced in the last year.
  • Inside, the cabin presents excellently, thanks in part to the work of Southbound Trimmers, who retrimmed the front seats with new-old-stock black cloth, as well as fixing both the headlining and the rear boot carpet in place.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults, and there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 8 September 2020 at 95,962 miles, resulting in a first-time pass with no warnings or advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • In May 2021, Porsche specialist AW Motorsport inspected the camshafts and cylinder heads and deemed them to be in excellent condition, before replacing the timing chain and guide runners, in addition to the cam cover and all of the associated gaskets and seals.
  • This 968 Sport’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in September 2020 at 95,956 miles by the same specialist. AW Motorsport was given a near ‘open book’ at this service and performed a full service and extensive overhaul where over 120 individual parts were fitted including replacement of the cam belt and rollers, balance belt and rollers, fuel lines and brake lines, as well as replacing the front suspension dampers, springs and top mounts. The rear brake discs and pads and handbrake shoes were replaced along with a refurbished power steering pump, a refurbished starter motor, new anti-roll bar bushes and front wishbone bushes. The total bill for this was over £3,200. The car was then taken to OPC Portsmouth for a 4-wheel total alignment.
  • In June 2019, RSR Engineering spent 18 hours working on the car replacing the oil sump gasket and a number of other seals on the engine. The car was also fully serviced at this point.
  • A new radiator was fitted in July 2018, and the clutch, water pump and rear dampers were replaced in October 2015.
