1995 PORSCHE 911 (993) CARRERA 4 CABRIOLET

This Porsche 911 (993) Carrera 4 Cabriolet is a well-maintained example of the last air-cooled 911 model, which is ready to drive and enjoy through the spring and summer months. Its 3.6-litre flat-six engine produces around 272bhp, and drives all four wheels via the desirable six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 87,950 miles from new.

First registered on 7 August 1995, the 911 Carrera 4 was supplied by main dealer Stratstone of Wilmslow. An original UK-market car, it was specified in Midnight Blue metallic paintwork with a full Midnight Blue leatherette interior, along with the 17-inch ‘Cup 2’ alloy wheels and the hard-shell sport seats. The vendor acquired the car seven years ago, and has had it looked after exclusively by a Porsche specialist during his tenure.

The smart styling of the 993 suits the demure hue of Midnight Blue very well, and there is no known prior damage to any of the panels. The paint finish itself is in generally good order for its age, though there are stone chips peppering the bonnet area, small scuffs around the lower front bumper, stone chips on the trailing edge of the driver’s door, and lacquer peel on the passenger door handle.

While a respray of the front end would improve the appearance in the future, this is a 911 you can jump in and drive without worrying about getting the odd nick in the paintwork. The dark blue soft top has a few small holes in the same place on both sides, but the mechanism works as it should. The rear spoiler is also in very good order, and the car rides on the original 17-inch ‘Cup 2’ alloy wheels, which are in great shape.

Inside, the cabin remains almost entirely original, with the only addition being the installation of a Becker Monza stereo head unit in place of the Sony unit fitted in 1995. The desirable hard-shell sport seats are in very good order, with no rips or tears in the upholstery, and only modest wear. Likewise, the steering wheel and gear knob have a smart patina, while the door cards and dashboard are in excellent condition. A wind deflector is also present. There are no known electrical faults, and the switchgear all works correctly.

The car benefits from evidently comprehensive maintenance throughout its life, with no fewer than 23 stamps in the two accompanying service record booklets – 19 of which are from Porsche main dealers or specialists. Its last scheduled service was in November 2020 at 87,363 miles, when HP Porsche carried out a minor oil service. Prior to this, an annual service was carried out in November 2019 at 87,096 miles, while a major service was performed in May 2018 at 84,659 miles – both also at HP Porsche. During the vendor’s ownership, it has also been treated to a complete overhaul of the brakes, renewed suspension, and a fresh set of tyres. A summary of the extensive history is included below.

The car’s latest MOT test was on 30 November 2020 at 87,363 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. A cursory glance at the online MOT history shows a near-perfect record over the last 15 years of tests, which is a very good indication of a well-cared for car. All four wheels are shod in Porsche N3-rated Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, which are in very good condition with around 6mm of tread.

Accompanying the car is a raft of documentation, as shown in the gallery, included many invoices and receipts for servicing and other maintenance, plus old MOT certificates, dating right back to the car’s early life. The complete original book pack is also present, plus a second stamped service book for the visits from 2014 onwards. A Porsche Certificate of Authenticity is present to confirm the factory specification, and the original build sticker is still under the front bonnet. The tool roll, spare wheel, and air compressor are also with the car, and it is fitted with a Thatcham Category 1 alarm system.

This Porsche 993 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is a great open-top sports car, which has had regular servicing throughout its life to keep it in strong mechanical condition. While the next owner could make some straightforward improvements to the paintwork if they wish, this is an eminently usable example of an acclaimed air-cooled modern classic, especially with its four-wheel drive system for optimal all-season stability. A well-sorted and unmolested 911; the vendor says that it has proven to be remarkably reliable over the last seven years, and it will no doubt make an exciting driver’s car for weekend blasts and cross-continental road trips.
