1995 PORSCHE 911 (993) CARRERA - MANUAL

This Porsche 993 Carrera is an excellent example of the last air-cooled 911, which benefits from a recent restoration by Porsche Centre Cardiff as part of the marque’s 911 50th Anniversary celebrations. Power comes from the 272bhp 3.6-litre naturally aspirated flat-six, driving the rear wheels through the sought-after six-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 82,845 miles.

First registered on 15 February 1995, this 911 was acquired by Porsche Centre Cardiff in 2013 from an existing customer who had kept the car in storage for the previous six years. The business then set about restoring this Porsche to its former glory, with more than 400 hours invested in cosmetic and mechanical refurbishment.

This formed part of a nationwide competition among Official Porsche Centres, to find 911s in need of some attention and bring them as close as possible back to the original condition. The vendor acquired the car in December 2015, and it was previously owned by a doctor who had purchased it from OPC Cardiff following the restoration. It has now covered around 8,500 since the rebuild was completed, and it remains in wonderful condition.

During the restoration, the 993’s engine and gearbox were removed, and the car was stripped of all its exterior trim, bumpers and mouldings. Any imperfections around the panels were rectified, and the paintwork was built back up to a wonderfully deep and glossy appearance. All of the body trims were reassembled, including various new gaskets and rubbers, and today it presents in genuinely superb order. The 18-inch alloys were refurbished in-house at Porsche Centre Cardiff, and they remain pristine, refinished with new coloured crest centre caps and black wheel bolts.

Stepping inside, this 911’s cabin remains highly original, fitted with the optional sport seats and fully trimmed in black leather upholstery. Porsche Centre Cardiff confirmed that the only items needing replacement were a non-original gear lever and the front luggage compartment carpet. Otherwise, the seats needed just some minor repairs and refurbishment, carried out by a local leather specialist. The car is equipped with air-conditioning, electric windows, an electric sliding sunroof, and a Becker Traffic Pro stereo head unit.

Its last routine maintenance was carried out in October 2020 at 82,798 miles, which comprised a two-year service at Porsche Centre Tonbridge, with renewal of the engine oil, fuel filter, air filter, and spark plugs, plush a vehicle health check. The vendor has had it serviced regularly at the same OPC since acquiring the car five years ago, per the summary below.

During the restoration, the technicians at Porsche Centre Cardiff stripped all the cam and timing chain covers for inspection, and found no signs of any wear to the interior components. The covers were replaced for cosmetic reasons, and the cooling fan and housing were also sent away for specialist refinishing. Numerous items such as fuel lines, exhaust heat shields, some suspension components, and many of the fixings and bolts were renewed. The engine was reunited with the chassis, and was treated to a full service with fresh oil and filters. Finally, the car was treated to a comprehensive geometry check and wheel alignment session.

The most recent MOT test was on 22 October 2020 at 82,825 miles, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories or defects noted. A full set of Continental SportContact tyres was fitted by OPC Cardiff in 2014, and these remain in good condition with ample tread remaining.

The current owner has put the car on the Porsche Classic Register, and notes that it is always garaged when not in use, and is only driven out in good weather. It is currently covered by an agreed value insurance policy, at a figure of £65,000.

Accompanying the car is an excellent service history record, as well as a specially commissioned photo book of the restoration at Porsche Centre Cardiff, which is also supplied in digital PDF format. The car comes with two keys, plus the maintenance book and driver’s manual, all stored in the original Porsche embossed leather folder.

This Porsche 993 Carrera is a particularly appealing modern classic, with the ever-popular combination of an air-cooled flat-six and a slick manual gearbox. It is undoubtedly one of the great ‘accessible’ analogue sports cars, and this example benefits from a detailed restoration at OPC Cardiff in 2014, which has returned it to a very impressive cosmetic and mechanical condition. It would be a wonderful addition to any Porsche collection as an exemplar of the 993 generation, and is ready to drive and enjoy.
