1994 PORSCHE 968 CLUB SPORT

This 1994 Porsche 968 Club Sport is an exciting and desirable driver’s car, presented in its original factory specification and sound overall condition. It is powered by the 237bhp 3.0-litre inline-four engine, driven through a six-speed Getrag manual transmission. The odometer shows 105,570 miles from new.

An original right-hand drive example, the car was supplied new via the Lancaster Cambridge main dealer and first registered in September 1994. It is understood to be one of just 179 UK-delivered cars. This 968 Club Sport has been owned by the vendor for a little over a year, and he has enjoyed several hundred miles behind the wheel.

The Guards Red paintwork is believed to be almost all original, with the vendor believing that only the front bumper and one rear quarter have had a respray at some point. Under the bonnet and in the door shuts, the original factory stickers are still in place.

There are the usual stone chips to the nose and flanks that you would expect to find on a car that’s been enjoyed on the road, as well as a very light scratch on the bonnet and a small mark on the rear bumper. Some of the lacquer has lifted on the bonnet, and there is also a patch of bubbling under the paint near the offside front wheel arch. The door jambs, bonnet and boot shuts are in sound condition.

It rides on a set of 17-inch ‘Cup 2’ alloy wheels that are colour-coded to the body, which are in very good order with only some paint lifting off the centre caps. The vendor notes that a weather strip is missing on the offside rear window glass, and that the undertray below the front bumper is partially cracked and needs replacing at some point. Both are inexpensive repairs for the next owner.

The car features a factory-fitted sunroof, which tilts, lifts out and clips back in as it should. At the rear, there is some minor delamination around the top edge of the glass screen over the boot, which is to be expected in a 25-year-old unrestored car.

Its cabin features the standard ‘series’ seats - a no-cost option from the factory when new - that are upholstered in black vinyl with grey cloth. They are in great condition, with only some minor wear noticeable on the driver’s seat. The leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob are the original factory-fitted items.

This particular Club Sport was specified with the ‘Luxury Package’ from the factory, which is recorded in the notes on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. Its build sticker codes confirm that the comfort seats (codes 381 and 382), electric windows (651) and a divided rear seat bench (685) were all added as options when new.

In August 2019, HP Porsche in London carried out a mechanical overhaul on the car, which included renewal of the camshaft timing and balance belts, tensioner and roller, as well as replacement oil seals at the front of the engine. The clutch assembly was replaced, incorporating new bearings in the clutch fork. A new slave cylinder was also fitted, followed by a full bleed of the system.

The car had a service and oil change at RPM Technik in March 2019 at 104,697 miles, and prior to that at DBM Specialist Cars in August 2015 at 102,690 miles. During the vendor’s ownership, he has also had the power steering oil cooler renewed after it sprung a leak, at a cost of £533. There are currently no known faults with the car.

Its most recent MOT test was in March 2019, which resulted in a pass with some minor advisories about wear on the front brake discs and to the front brake pipes. The car was also seen by independent specialist Walker's Autotech, which advised that replacement of the items was not required at that stage. The wheels are shod in a fresh set of tyres on the rear, while those on the front axle still have around 5mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying the car is the original set of books, including the stamped service record, as well as a large folder of history with a raft of invoices, receipts and old MOT certificates. It also comes with two original sets of keys.

This Porsche 968 Club Sport Lux is described as being “a very honest example” by its vendor. The car is reported to drive superbly, with an engine that runs smoothly and pulls strongly, and with no knocks or bangs from the suspension. After a somewhat lacklustre reception to the standard 968, the Club Sport redeemed Porsche in the performance-focused media, and these terrific front-engined cars remain highly regarded today.
