1992 PORSCHE 944 S2 SE

KEY FACTS

  • A superb example of one of Porsche’s rarest road cars, benefitting from a prior restoration and presented in fantastic condition.
  • Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre aluminium-block inline-four, which produces up to 225bhp and drives the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
  • The odometer currently displays 4,949 miles, which is the distance the car has covered since its restoration and engine rebuild by marque specialist Rennsport in 2017.
  • Only produced for the UK market, the SE was a run-out special version of the popular 944 S2 with a number of mechanical and cosmetic enhancements.
  • In total, it is understood that only 14 SE cars were produced, and so rare is this model that its creation was long thought to be a myth. Furthermore, only six are currently known to still exist today.
  • Only one other road-going car has come to the market in recent years, sold at the Goodwood Revival in 2017.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Created to mark the end of the 944’s production, the SE model boasts a number of desirable upgrades, including Koni adjustable suspension dampers, a limited-slip differential, additional rear coil springs, an adjustable rear stabiliser bar and a stiffer front stabiliser bar. It can be tuned to suit the driver’s requirements.
  • Furthermore, the car rides 30mm lower than the S2 and its engine output was increased to 225bhp with increased torque from 4,250rpm, courtesy of a remapped ECU.
  • Cosmetic enhancements include a colour-coded rear bridge spoiler, SE rear badges and side stripes, and a three-spoke Club Sport steering wheel.
  • This particular example is finished in the classic hue of Alpine White, with blue ‘Porsche’ script fabric upholstery and a blue dashboard.
  • It rides on the correct set of 16-inch ‘Design 90’ alloy wheels, which are in great shape, with only one very small blemish on the rim of the rear driver’s-side wheel.
  • The car will be accompanied by a number of USB flash drives containing photographs of its rebuild, as well as invoices for all maintenance carried out during the seller’s two years of ownership.
  • A copy of the internal Porsche memo giving approval for the purchase of parts to construct the 944 S2 SE cars is included.

CONDITION

  • No known prior bodywork damage.
  • The Alpine White paintwork has previously been resprayed and is in excellent condition, with the only notable flaw being a small blemish in the protective stone chip paintwork on the driver’s-side sill.
  • Inside, the cabin presents very well indeed, and while there is some slight wear to the driver’s seat bolster, small scuffs on the passenger-side of the centre console, and a degree of fading on the front seats’ upholstery, this is in line with the car’s age.
  • There are no known electrical or mechanical faults, though the seller recommends that the next owner replaces the alarm system as it drains the battery, and the headlight washer system is not currently connected.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 5 November 2020 at an indicated 4,344 miles, which resulted in a pass after the steering shaft and the front lower suspension ball joints were replaced, with advisories noting a minor oil leak and corrosion on the offside rear brake pipe.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This 944 S2 SE’s most recent full service was carried out in 2017 by Porsche specialist Rennsport as part of its restoration.
  • During their ownership the vendor has also tended to a number of minor cosmetic and mechanical issues, including replacing the clutch slave and master cylinders, the idle stabiliser valve and the door speakers, and repairing the digital clock, the electrically adjustable driver’s seat and the petrol cap.

SUMMARY

Understood to be one of only 14 produced, of which six are known to survive, this 1992 Porsche 944 S2 SE is a tremendously rare version of the marque’s popular transaxle sports car, and it is accompanied by a copy of the internal memo regarding its creation. Benefitting from a prior restoration and doted on by its current owner, this SE would make a unique addition to any Porsche collection, while its enhanced engine and uprated suspension components will help to make every drive that little bit more special.
