1992 PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA RS RECREATION

This 1992 Porsche 964 Carrera RS Recreation is a stunning homage to the iconic lightened and track-focused model, which has been finished to an incredibly high standard throughout and is fitted with an array of genuine RS mechanical components and cosmetic items. Under the engine lid is the RS-specific 3.6-litre air-cooled ‘M64/03’ air-cooled flat-six, which has been tuned to produce 282bhp and 274lb-ft of torque. This drives the rear wheels via a five-speed close-ratio RS specification manual transmission and an asymmetrical limited-slip differential. The odometer displays 76,276 miles from new.

First registered in March 1993, this thrilling sports car started life as a 964-generation Carrera 2, which was finished in Horizon Blue metallic and featured a Tiptronic automatic transmission. After changing hands several times, it eventually found its way to a new owner in 2016, who set about having it rebuilt as a recreation of the highly sought-after 964 RS, using genuine used parts supplied by Porsche GB. Now complete and tuned for fast road use, this unique modern classic 911 is offered for sale in superb order.

Having been fully stripped back, restored and seam welded for added rigidity, this non-sunroof 964’s bodywork is in outstanding condition, with even shut lines and no evidence of prior accident damage. The car is also HPI clear. It features the correct RS-specific rear bumper, while the front bumper is fitted with RS air ducts in place of its fog lights. Though it was originally finished in Horizon Blue metallic, the car was repainted in the attractive Porsche hue of Graphite Grey, which gives it a sleek, modern appearance while showcasing the 911’s flowing lines to great effect.

The paintwork is in excellent shape, having been covered in Topaz paint protection film, and is free of any marks or blemishes. In line with its clean styling, this Carrera’s exterior trim is somewhat limited, but its badges and light lenses are in great shape, with the same being the case for the rear reflector panel. Both of the headlights have been replaced with uprated LED units, which look very smart and provide additional illumination during late-night drives. The car rides on a set of 17-inch ‘Cup’ alloy wheels, which are unmarked and feature ‘RS’-branded centre caps.

Moving inside, the cabin has been fully retrimmed and upgraded, again using genuine 964 RS parts wherever possible. Most notably, this includes the car’s RS-specific lightweight bucket seats, which are trimmed in black and three-tone grey leather upholstery. Both show some signs of use, but there is no heavy wear or damage to speak of. In the rear, a half-cage has been fitted for added rigidity and safety, while giving this Porsche an additional touch of race-inspired flair. Ahead, the steering wheel has been replaced with an Alcantara-wrapped Momo item, and the gauge faces have been matched to the body colour.

While the Carrera RS is generally known for its uncompromising focus on lightweight performance, this recreation is not without its creature comforts, and is equipped with a modern yet subtle Porsche Classic infotainment system, which provides DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and satellite navigation. All of the car’s buttons, switches and electrical items work as they should, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

Its most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2021 at 76,278 miles by Porsche specialist Charles Ivey, which was a general oil and filter change. Prior to this, the car was fully restored and rebuilt between 2016 and 2019, with the work being carried out by a number of Porsche specialists, including Wuff Zuff and Fearnsport. This included complete refurbishment of the body, which was then seam welded and resprayed, while the interior was fully retrimmed. More importantly, this former Carrera 2 was fitted with a genuine 964 RS engine and close-ratio manual transmission with a lightweight flywheel, as well as an RS exhaust system.

Furthermore, its road-holding abilities have been enhanced courtesy of a set of Bilstein PSS10 adjustable dampers, and the vendor will also include a standard set of RS dampers with the car. Given its tuned 282bhp power output and 1,280kg kerb weight, it comes as little surprise that the brakes were also tended to, with 911 Turbo discs fitted and the front and Cup items at the rear, with all four being gripped by RS callipers. With a power-to-weight ratio of 220bhp/tonne, this particular car occupies a compelling middle ground between a genuine 964 RS and the later 993 RS.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 1 April 2021 at 76,281 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass without a single advisory. All four wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, which date to 2019 and are in excellent condition, with around 5mm of tread remaining.

The car will be accompanied by its owner’s manual and partially stamped service book, as well as a range of documents which detail its history and restoration.

This 964-generation Porsche 911 Carrera is a wonderful recreation of the focused Carrera RS model, which has been built to an incredible standard using genuine parts and is presented in superb overall condition. Featuring an RS engine and gearbox, this 911 represents the opportunity to experience the analogue thrills of the Rennsport model at a significantly lower price, making this faithful tribute arguably the perfect usable sports car for any Porsche enthusiast.
