1992 PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA RS

This 1992 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera RS is an undisputed modern classic, which has undergone an extensive restoration following some body damage, and now presents in impressive condition throughout. It is equipped with the numbers-matching 3.6-litre air-cooled flat-six, coupled with its original and engaging five-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently indicates 128,444 km from new.

First registered in February 1992, this 964 has been with its current keeper for 21 years. In 2017, the offside wings, axles, and wheels were damaged after the car had a low-speed impact along one side following a loss of grip of a slippery road. The vendor therefore decided to carry out a complete body-off restoration, returning the car to a highly original specification, though with a few discerning modifications.

Today, it features its factory 3.6-litre flat-six, a restored transmission and a set of 17-inch magnesium alloys (painted in satin black, but easily refurbished to the original silver), though it has also been fitted with RSR camshafts and a 964 Speedster steering wheel from Porsche Tequipment. In 2008, a GT system stainless-steel exhaust system by Fa. Stueber in Germany was installed, featuring 200-cell catalysts from HJS and the rare heating option, as a new price of €7,000. The car also comes with a set of rare Porsche-specified AZEV Type A wheels – lighter than the original Porsche wheels, and as used on the 964 Cup cars – with semi-slick tyres. Now, it produces around 294bhp and 264lb-ft of torque, and has been described as a lively and fast example of the breed.

Prior to the accident, the car had been painted orange by a previous owner, though it was returned to its original shade of Grand Prix White during the restoration process and now sports a few decals. The condition of the paintwork has been described as excellent, with the vendor noting that only one stone chip can be seen in the windscreen. The body trims, light lenses and badging all present very well. The car is pictured on its 17-inch AZEV wheels, which were only fitted in 2020. Prior to this, the lightweight alloys were unused and stored for 20 years by a dealer.

Inside, the black leather trim is in excellent condition. The carpets have been replaced, though the seats remain entirely original and feature some age-related creasing to the bolsters and centre panels. The three-spoke Speedster steering wheel is in good order, featuring bold red stitching to match the seat belts and dial needles. It has also been prepared to accept six-point safety harnesses. The dashboard plastics are free of any notable scuffs, and no electrical faults have been detected.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in April 2020 at 127,881 km, where technicians at Sportwagen-Mittermaier in Irschenberg carried out a full service, changing the engine oil, filters, spark plugs and brake fluid, before fitting a genuine replacement RS clutch and distributor cap. The car also received a brake overhaul with new front brake discs. Prior to this, services were undertaken in 2019 and 2017. In April 2021, the hydraulic struts for the engine cover were both replaced with new items.

Accompanying the vehicle are the original handbook and service book, along with two keys and maintenance documentation dating back to the vendor’s purchase of the car in 2000.

This Porsche 964 Carrera RS is a smart numbers-matching example of a beloved modern classic, which has undergone a body-off restoration and also features a few performance-focused modifications. Ideal as a thrilling weekend toy, whether driven on the road or the track, this lightly enhanced Carrera RS is a tempting opportunity for any keen driver or air-cooled Porsche fan.
