1992 PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA 4

This Porsche 911 Carrera 4 is a highly original and cherished example of the 964-generation model, benefiting from a recent engine rebuild. Under the rear decklid resides the air-cooled, 3.6-litre flat-six producing around 250bhp, which is sent to all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 109,359 miles from new.

Supplied new by Dick Lovett of Swindon on 1 August 1992, this UK-market 911 has just two owners from new. The first from 1992 until 2015, when it was serviced annually by Dick Lovett; and the second owner since then, who has kept the car annually serviced by RPM Technik. Two stamped service books and a raft of invoices support its excellent history, and such is its originality that it still retains its dealer-fitted number plates.

Finished in the classic shade of Guards Red; this 911’s paintwork remains in good order, with an even shine and no lacquer damage visible. Some stone chips are visible on the front bumper and bonnet area, which have been touched in over time. Marks are also visible on the scuttle panel, but the overall impression is that this example has been well-cared for to date. The vendor notes that there is a hairline crack visible on the GRP rear spoiler, and one in the offside tail light (though, as shown in the photo, it has not broken through). The rest of the integrated rear light and reflector bar remains undamaged. This example retains its original ‘Design 90’ 16-inch alloy wheels, which are in great shape.

The cabin of the 911 remains in very good condition, and is further evidence of its cherished ownership. Specified from the factory with the desirable sport seats, the leather upholstery shows a degree of patina in line with its age, with light creasing but no tears or other damage. The dashboard and door cards remain in good order, and the only non-original item is the steering wheel with a genuine Clubsport item as seen in the RS and Speedster models – though the original is included in the sale. While the lift function on one electric seat is occasionally intermittent, there are no other known electrical foibles, and no warning lights illuminated.

This 964 has been comprehensively serviced and maintained to date, with annual visits to Dick Lovett during the first owner’s tenure, and annual services at renowned specialist RPM Technik since acquired by the vendor. The most recent maintenance was in March 2020 at 109,233 miles. This was a service as per the 48k mileage interval, which saw the spark plugs, fuel filter and oil filter replaced, as well as the brake fluid, engine oil and gearbox oil. Prior to this, the 911 was serviced in March 2019 at 108,945 miles at RPM. This entailed replacement of the engine oil, oil filter, fan resistor, washer valves, front and rear wipers and both offside and nearside drop links.

During the vendor’s ownership, the engine was rebuilt at 104,395 miles with a dyno report confirming its factory-matching output of 251bhp. In addition, Powerflex lower control arms were fitted, plus new lambda sensors, spring plates, a replacement immobiliser, starter motor, alternator and a host of other switches, brackets, boots and gaiters. The vendor notes that the rear spoiler let-down mechanism makes a slight noise, which he has been told is a common occurrence and not a problem, so it has been left as-is.

The most recent MOT test was on 15 March 2021 at 109,358 miles, which was an advisory-free, first-time pass. Riding on a matching set of Michelin Exalto tyres, these remain in good condition and have covered less than 5,000 miles since being fitted.

Included in the sale will be two fully stamped service books, with 29 stamps to date, and all original MOT certificates from 1995 until the present day. The original Porsche driver’s manual, sales literature, tool kit, spare wheel, and tyre inflator are also present.

This Porsche 964 Carrera 4 is a rare opportunity to acquire a highly original, two-owner car with impeccable service history. With the added benefit of a recently rebuilt engine and desirable options, it will no doubt appeal to discerning collectors and keen drivers alike, as a wonderful example of an acclaimed air-cooled 911.
