1992 BMW (E34) M5

The flagship BMW E34 M5 represents the ultimate 1990s executive express, blending power and sophistication in an unassuming package. This highly original 1992 example is finished in Diamondschwarz and has been mechanically refreshed with a recent full engine rebuild, bolstering an extensive service history. Its engine is the 3.6-litre high-compression straight-six, which develops 311hp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 307,348 km.

One of a small number of right-hand-drive E34 M5s to be finished in Diamond Black Metallic; it is believed to retain original paintwork across the vehicle, with a deep gloss still present in direct sunlight. The body is straight and solid, with only minor stone chips on the front bar and valance, and a few minor marks on the bonnet.

One point of interest are the original and highly sought after BMW Style 20 ‘Turbine’ forged alloy wheels wrapped with Continental tyres. The plastic trims, rubbers and seals are in good condition, aside from some minor ageing to the exterior door handle seals.

The extended Light Silver Grey Leather interior presents in highly original condition. Both front and rear seats are in good order, with only some minor marks on the driver’s bolster. All electrical functions are working on both sides of the cabin. The M-Tech steering wheel is wrapped with original leather displaying a nice patina, complementing the vehicle’s age.

The dashboard is in excellent condition with no fading, discolouration or cracking. The instrument binnacle houses the original M5 300 km/h cluster and displays no warning lights. A replacement gaiter for the gear knob has recently been installed, while the original handbrake gaiter would also benefit from replacement. There is some noticeable ageing on the extended leather console and door cards, particularly the front driver’s side door panel. The sunroof switch panel requires replacement clips to create a tight fit to the headlining.

The dashboard centre console houses working air-conditioning controls and the original BMW radio-cassette system. The factory OBC 16-button ‘onboard computer’ is functional and shows no known issues with the vehicle. All switchgear appears original and shows minimal wear.

The boot houses a complete original toolkit, a typical indicator of an enthusiast-kept vehicle. The boot floor features the original luggage net, ski hatch bag and side storage compartments, with a rust-free wheel well housing a matching spare forged ‘Turbine’ alloy wheel.

With an excellent service history regime from its Australian delivery in 1992, the M5 will come with original books and a folder of service documents. The current keeper has owned the vehicle for over 10 years and has recently commissioned a full engine rebuild with no expense spared. Bidders’ attention is drawn to a slight weep on the clutch slave cylinder and a minor area of corrosion visible on the removable sunroof panel, around the seal on the driver’s side.

A highly original example in a handsome factory colour scheme, this BMW M5 would be an exciting addition to any collection; offering its future custodian a landmark performance car from arguably the peak of BMW’s 1990s engineering prowess.
