1991 BMW (E30) M3 CONVERTIBLE

KEY FACTS

• An exceptionally well-preserved drop-top performance car, with incredibly low mileage and in genuine ‘time warp’ condition throughout.
• It is powered by the 195hp 2.3-litre naturally aspirated S14 inline-four, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• The E30-generation BMW M3 was designed specifically with Group A touring car racing in mind, and was initially intended to be a limited-run homologation special. While it was built in fairly large numbers as a coupe, this is one of only 786 convertibles built.
• Finished in Diamantschwarz metallic (Diamond Black), it has the silver leather interior with M Sport tri-colour accents on the seats.
• Factory equipment includes electric windows, an electric roof, heated front seats, and the BMW Bavaria C Business stereo with central cassette storage trays.
• Its complete and original tool kit is stored in the boot, along with the unused first aid kit, spare wheel including crank and jack, and the warning triangle.
• The original owner’s manual, service directory, maintenance record, M3 supplement, stereo handbook, and M Style brochure are also present. All books are in pristine condition and are safely stored in the original clear plastic sleeve.
• The car comes with the original full log book (green Fahrzeugbrief) with number plate stamps up to 1998, and the green insert (Abmeldebescheinigung Für den Fahrzeughalter).
• The purchase receipt from when the vendor’s family acquired the car in 1998 is also included. While it resides in the UK, the car has never been officially exported from Germany. It therefore remains an EU taxes-paid vehicle.
• CONDITION
• There is no bodywork damage; the car is completely original.
• Its Diamond Black paintwork is in excellent condition, as shown in the photo gallery below. There is a slight chip to the right of the BMW badge on the front, but otherwise it looks immaculate throughout. The finish was given a clay bar treatment and full polish before having the photos taken.
• As you would expect, the tyres are the original items from 1992, having been retained for the sake of originality.
• The interior is pristine, genuinely presenting in as-new condition with no damage or wear to the silver leather upholstery. The vendor states that it still has the ‘new leather’ smell.
• All of the controls work as they should, and there are no electrical faults.

SERVICE HISTORY

• Its last service was in July 2020 at 1,071 km, carried out by CS Sportscar (Christian Sanger). The engine oil was drained and replaced, the oil filter was changed - with the previous filter from 1992 kept for authenticity - and the fuel was also drained and replaced.
• Prior to this, there was a documented service in October 1997 at 250 km.
• The car has not needed any other maintenance as it has been kept off the road and stored professionally over the last 23 years.

SUMMARY

This BMW M3 Convertible is very likely an unrepeatable car. Just 786 examples of the E30-era drop-top are known to have been built, and there can be few if any that can match this car’s combination of exceptional condition and astonishing low mileage. The M3 presents in genuine ‘time warp’ order, as if stepping back into an early 1990s showroom. It has been beautifully preserved, and is now ready to take pride of place within any discerning BMW collection or perhaps even a museum.
