1990 PORSCHE 944 S2 CABRIOLET

This 1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is a rewarding modern classic, boasting single family ownership from new, and which is ripe for some straightforward cosmetic rejuvenation. It is equipped with a 3.0-litre alloy inline-four producing around 208bhp, coupled with an engaging five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 79,445 miles from new.

First registered in January 1990, this 944 S2 has been with the same family for 31 years, initially registered in the vendor’s late mother’s name for a few years, and subsequently his own – though he is the only driver. It has never been repainted or re-trimmed, so remains highly original.

The car’s handsome bodywork is in good shape, with no accident damage. The gloss black paintwork is described as being in fair order for its age, and does have some scratches, scuffs and chips that you may expect from an unrestored 31-year-old car. The gallery below provides an honest and detailed presentation of the car’s cosmetic condition. While it would be easily improved, it is of course perfectly usable as-is.

The original Porsche decal remains in place around the rear bumper top trim, while the paint protection film around the wheel arches has now cracked and discoloured with age so would benefit from replacement. The soft top roof was replaced in November 2019 so is in excellent condition, fitting well and with the mechanism in full working order. The vehicle rides on the original 16-inch alloy wheels, which have some kerb scuffs and chips.

Inside, the seats are trimmed with beige leather, which is in generally good condition for its age. The most obvious wear is to the driver’s seat outer bolster, which is scuffed and worn through in one small patch, but which would be straightforward to repair or re-trim. It also has a small tear along the stitching on the base cushion. The rest of the leather has some small marks and stains, and would benefit from a professional re-connolising treatment.

The steering wheel and gear knob have some age-related wear, though the dashboard and door cards present well, with just one or two minor scuffs, and with a missing speaker cover. The vendor reports the fuel gauge is possibly faulty, so would require some further investigation, but the electrics are otherwise in good order.

The last routine maintenance was undertaken in July 2019 at 78,981 miles, where technicians at Jaz Siat Porsche replaced the battery, cambelt, power steering and alternator belt. In November 2019, the soft top hood was renewed. Prior to this, the car had spent around seven years off the road in storage, with the previous service being in October 2010, including a new cambelt, spark plugs and filters.

The most recent MOT test was on 17 July 2019 at 78,983 miles, which resulted in a pass with one advisory to monitor slight corrosion to both front brake hose ferrules. It will need a fresh 12-month MOT certificate before returning to the road again. The wheels come wrapped in a set of Michelin tyres, which were fitted in July 2019.

Accompanying the vehicle are the service book, a selection of maintenance invoices and even an original Porsche cleaning kit.

This Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet is reported to be a mechanically sound example of the marque’s handsome modern classic sports car, which has been enjoyed by just one family – and really only a single driver – from new. Though this 944 has some age-related blemishes, they would be easy to improve over time, making this car a straightforward project for a dedicated enthusiast.
