1990 PORSCHE 911 (964) CARRERA 4

This Porsche 911 Carrera 4 is a desirable and highly useable example of the penultimate generation of air-cooled 911. Under the engine cover is a 3.6-litre flat-six engine producing around 247bhp and 228lb-ft of torque, driving all four wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 117,313 km (72,894 miles) from new.

A left-hand drive, German-delivery example first registered on 1 August 1989, this 911 has been in the hands of its current private owner for the past 18 years and remains in highly original condition throughout. The owner bought the car in 2002 on a Jersey registration number, but only officially imported and re-registered it in the UK in January 2020. It is now offered for sale on behalf of the owner, and shows only one registered UK keeper on the V5C.

Finished in the rare shade of Forest Green metallic, this 964’s tautly sculpted bodywork remains in good order. The vendor states that the car has been resprayed and is in superb condition, not showing any stone chips that can otherwise plague the low front end of 964s. Both the paintwork and glass remain in excellent order, though the rear lenses and the reflector bar are cracked and slightly discoloured.

Riding on five-spoke 17-inch ‘Cup 2’ alloy wheels, these remain in good order with no kerbing damage to speak of; though the centre caps could benefit from replacement. The electrically operated rear spoiler rises automatically at speed, with the manual override function also operational.

Inside, the 911’s relatively simple cabin remains complete, with some signs of patina. Both electrically adjustable front seats are free of rips or tears, though there is some wear evident on their outer bolsters and corners of the seat base. Marks are also visible to the seat backs, but the door cards present well.

The dashboard and its switchgear are complete, with wear visible on the gear knob and slight distortion to the dashboard. The vendor also adds that there is a tear on the headlining. An aftermarket Alpine Minidisc stereo is fitted, with a CD changer in the glovebox. The odometer has stopped working within the last two months – as proven by the MOT history – but otherwise there are no known faults, and no warning lights.

A recent oil change was carried out by Northway Porsche of Reading in January 2021, along with replacement of the clutch and slave cylinder. In 2015, the rear brake discs and pads were replaced, along with the anti-roll bar bushes, while the spark plugs were replaced during routine servicing in 2013 when the car had covered about 115,000 km. As is common with 964s, there is evidence of expected minor oil leaks from the engine, but the vendor states they are not significant enough to merit any rectification at this stage as the engine performs so strongly.

While there are a few invoices for parts, there is no stamped service book or other significant maintenance history. However, the MOT history substantiates the low mileage from March 2013 to the present day.

The most recent MOT test was on 27 November 2020 at 117,113 km (72,770 miles). This was a first-time pass, with zero advisories. Riding on a mix of Continental and Pirelli tyres, these have ample tread remaining but would benefit from replacement soon due to their 2013 date stamp.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 4 offers a wonderfully tactile, analogue driving experience from its lithe chassis. Presented here in an appealing colourway – and with a very respectable mileage recorded on the odometer – it would be the perfect example for a future owner to drive as often as they see fit, with some minor interior attention set to improve an already impressive driver’s classic.
