1990 BMW Z1 ROADSTER - 10,243 KM & LHD

This BMW Z1 is a remarkably low-mileage example of a rare modern classic, finished in a superb colour scheme. Under the bonnet is the 2.5-litre straight six from the E30 325i, producing around 170hp, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows just 10,234 km (6,359 miles) from new.

The Z1 was an incredibly bold design, with thermoplastic and GRP body panels that were completely removable and interchangeable - though in reality few if any owners have ever gone through this process. Nevertheless, it was a revolutionary design, with wonderfully idiosyncratic doors that dropped down into the high sills to allow entry and exit – and the Z1 could even be driven with the doors down. It also featured one of the earliest applications of multi-link suspension, delivering far greater stability and refinement.

First registered in September 1990, the seller reports that this Z1 was delivered to Italy where it remained with a single private owner for the next 26 years. Evidently a cherished car, and driven sparingly, it was acquired by the current owner four years ago.

Today, the bodywork presents in superb overall condition, with no accident damage, and with the show-stopping drop-down doors working perfectly. There is a small crack in the front left wing under the side repeater, which is clearly shown in the photo gallery. The metallic green paint finish is believed to be the original factory coat, and the seller notes just a few minor stone chips at the bottom of the bumper. The black fabric soft top is in great shape, with no damage to the outer material or the rear window, and it fits snugly over the frame.

The interior is in very good order, with some typical wear common to Z1s, with scuffs caused by driver and passenger climbing in and out over the high sills. The seats are trimmed in a combination of beige leather and patterned fabric, which has some slight discolouration and signs of age, but with no tears or holes in the material. Some small scuffs are also present in the leather trim near the seat belt mounting points, and there are some storage stains on the roof headlining. Overall, the cabin presents well for a car that is now 30 years old.

A Becker DTM stereo head unit with a CD player and satellite navigation is installed in the centre console, and all of the main switchgear and electrics work as they should. The only note from the seller is that the driver’s side door lock is broken, and that the key-based central locking must be operated from the passenger side.

The last service was conducted by BMW Munich in May 2020. This included replacement of a broken window switch, as well as a thorough vehicle inspection in preparation for a German TÜV roadworthiness inspection. During this service it also received a historical ‘H’ registration plate, which requires an in-depth assessment by an independent appraiser, certifying the originality of the car.

Prior to this, its recent services were in April 2018 at 9,908 km, which included renewal of the brake fluid, a new hydraulic steering line, and an inspection of the rear axle; and in September 2016 at 8,920 km, which include new cross ties on both sides, adjustment of the track on the front axle, new gearbox oil, a fresh set of spark plugs, and replacement of the cambelt.

The seller reports that there is currently a slight rattle in the steering rack. The issue has been looked at by the BMW main dealer in 2020 and it would require replacement rather than repair, if the next owner desires. However, the dealer also confirmed that the rattle does not constitute a safety issue or have a negative impact on the driving experience.

The Hankook tyres were fitted when the seller bought the car in September 2016, and since then the car has been driven less than 2,000 km, so they remain in superb condition. Accompanying the car is the original Italian purchase contract from 1989, all of the handbooks and original documentation, some original tools in the storage box under the boot lid, and the space-saver spare wheel.

This BMW Z1 is the genesis of the marque’s ‘Z car’ line of roadsters, yet arguably remains the most intriguing and attention-grabbing of all the generations. With its drop-down doors and lightweight composite and thermoplastic body, it is an innovative piece of engineering, not to mention being great fun to drive. A true modern classic; this boldly designed convertible would make a wonderful addition to any collection.

As this car is offered for sale from continental Europe, it has not been run through Collecting Cars’ standard online HPI check process.
