1990 BMW (E30) M3 SPORT EVO (EVOLUTION III)

KEY FACTS

• A fantastic modern classic; the Sport Evo (Evolution III) represents the most highly developed version of the E30 M3, and is a very rare and coveted performance car.
• Under the hood is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder ‘S14’ engine, which produces up to 238bhp and drives the rear wheels via a dog-leg five-speed manual transmission.
• This car remains highly original with the factory paint colour and optional leather upholstery, but also benefits from a few subtle but reversible upgrades.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

• In total, only 600 examples of the highly developed Sport Evolution model were built between 1989 and early 1990. As well as their upgraded engines, these Group A homologation specials also featured a revised differential ratio and unique bodywork with more pronounced front wings, adjustable front and rear spoilers, brake cooling ducts in their front bumpers and 16-inch BBS alloy wheels.
• Also known as the ‘Evolution III’, this model was only available with Brilliant Red or Jet Black paintwork with red bumper stripes, and was also fitted with thinner window glass for reduced weight.
• The interior specification of the Sport Evo adds further to the motorsport feel of the car, with Recaro front seats, red seat belts and suede trim for the steering wheel, gear shifter, and handbrake grip.
• This car is also equipped with the factory-fit electric windows, anthracite headlining, a sliding sunroof, headlight washers, rear window sunblind, velour floor mats, on-board computer, BMW Bavaria radio system, and headlight beam adjustment.
• While it remains largely original, the car has had a custom stereo installation by Ai Design, which includes a period-correct Alpine head unit that was restored, and a custom subwoofer and enclosure. The system now has Bluetooth audio and hands-free telephony. The subwoofer enclosure, covered in an original E30 M3 trunk carpet mat, was clamped to the rear strut brace instead of being screwed to the floor, meaning that it is entirely reversible - and all original parts were retained, including the original radio.
• An aftermarket Stromung performance exhaust system has also been installed, along with upgraded H&R Cup suspension, which was sourced in boxed and brand-new condition during the current ownership. It has also been fitted with a finned differential cover, oil cooling kit, and a UUC short shifter.
• Air conditioning has been installed, featuring an electric fan and belt-driven fan.
• The car comes with all service history for the last four years of ownership.

CONDITION

• There is no known prior accident damage, though it is believed a prior scratch on the hood and bumper from transport were previously repaired.
• Its paintwork is described as being generally excellent, and it is believed to be original to the car – with the exception of the repair noted above. There are only very minor flaws consistent with age and gentle use, but not abuse.
• The interior is evidently in very good condition overall, with natural ageing and surface creasing to the black Nappa leather, but no heavy wear or discoloration. The door cards and headlining are in good order, and the carpets and floor mats also present well with only minor wear.
• No electrical faults have been detected.

SERVICE HISTORY

• During the current ownership, this M3 Sport Evo has received a full engine rebuild and refresh. New tires were fitted within the last few weeks.
• The car has also been fitted with an upgraded alternator, refurbished brakes, and uprated suspension.

SUMMARY

This BMW M3 Sport Evo (Evolution III) is a striking example of the breed, with all of the luxury factory options added in by the first owner. It is in remarkably good condition for its age, having evidently been well preserved, but used sensibly so that the next owner does not need to worry about adding miles. These cars continue to be very sought after as the peak of E30 M3 development, and this one is ready to hit the street given a recent engine rebuild to make it in fine mechanical order.
