1989 PORSCHE 928 S4

This 1989 Porsche 928 is a sound example of the 1980s classic featuring all of the benefits that come with an S4 model. As a result, opening the bonnet reveals the wonderful 5.0-litre M28/41 naturally aspirated V8 engine, which is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. As a very practical performance car that loves to be driven, the mileage is an honest 157,413km.

A genuine grand tourer, the 928 offers Porsche's sporting prowess with excellent usability. The introduction of the S4 saw significant improvements over the S2, with the V8’s displacement up from 4.7 to 5.0 litres, and a 32-valve DOHC cylinder head design. Braking was given a notable boost with Brembo front discs and four-piston calipers, with the clever multi-link 'Weissach' rear axle ensuring improved stability and reduced the lift-off oversteer of earlier models.

First registered 12 January 1989, the car has been with the current owner in Sydney for the past year. Impressed by the relatively original condition of the car, he has particular praise for the engine performance and handling, which can surprise those who have never had the chance to sample a 928 before.

Finished in the factory midnight blue, the owner has provided extensive detail on the condition of the vehicle's exterior. A small rust repair and repaint has been performed on the passenger side rear quarter panel, and there is evidence of touch-up repairs in two locations on the sunroof. There are small stone chips on the front bar, both front guards, a scratch above the passenger parking light, and one light 5cm scratch on the driver's front guard. A number of very small vertical scratches appear on the passenger door trim, a slight ding on the rear bar and some minor blemishes on the roof. However, it is fair to say that this modern classic still presents in very good order, as illustrated in the photo set below.

Inside, the leather upholstery is all original and is still in excellent condition for its age and mileage. The owner reports a tiny amount of loose stitching at the front of the passenger seat and a minor section of wear on the backrest. During the current owner’s time with the car, they have had the dashboard removed and re-trimmed, in addition to a re-trimmed centre console and A-pillars. The original comfort and prestige of the interior is still evident, with the only modern addition being a Kenwood stereo head unit with CD player, Bluetooth and USB connectivity.

With the highly regarded 5.0-litre M28/41 V8 under the bonnet the 928 has provided its current owner with trouble-free motoring over the last year. The vehicle underwent a registration inspection on 7 April 2020 resulting in a clean pass with no advisories. It was then serviced on 21 September 2020 at 157,232km by Penstech Automotive Services, with technicians changing the engine oil and filter. A new flasher relay was required, which has been ordered by the owner, and will be supplied with the car.

Accompanying the vehicle is the original stamped service book from 12 January 1989 to 22 March 2004 when the vehicle showed 91,780km. Since purchasing the car, the owner has recommenced completing the service book and also notes a good 5mm of tyre tread. Lifting the carpet in the rear reveals the Space Master spare tyre and jack in an upholstered pouch.

This Porsche 928 is a wonderful modern classic in highly sought-after S4 guise. The luxury grand tourer offers the pleasures of 1980s style on the outside and the comforts of electrically adjustable seats, air-conditioning and a power-operated sunroof inside. The glorious V8 provides a visceral soundtrack, whether you choose a short weekend drive or wish to experience the superb continent-crossing capabilities of this magnificent German GT.
