1989 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SUPER SPORT CABRIOLET

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Cabriolet with Super Sport Equipment is a very well-presented example of a 1980s sports car icon, finished in a handsome colour scheme, and benefitting from significant investment in its condition. Under the engine lid is the 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six - uprated to 266bhp - driving the rear wheels via the five-speed G50 manual transmission. The odometer shows 75,610 miles.

An original UK-market car, this Carrera 3.2 left the factory fitted with the M491 ‘Super Sport Equipment’ package, which comprised 911 Turbo-style flared wheel arches, a black lip spoiler at the front and the ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear. The Super Sport carried over the more powerful brakes and the anti-roll bars from the 3.3-litre Turbo as well. It was first registered in April 1989, and was acquired by the current owner six years ago.

Today, this car’s bodywork presents in very good order. It is fresh from an £11,000 cosmetic refurbishment at Canford Classics, including kidney bowl restoration on the driver’s side, as well as repairs along the section stretching back to the rear bumper, and on the bottom edge of the front wing on the same side. The objective was to ensure that there would be no rust issues to worry about for the next owner. Its beautiful Baltic Blue paintwork is in great shape, benefitting from a refreshed appearance.

This 911 features a dark blue soft top, which complements the bodywork perfectly, and which presents in excellent condition, with no rips or holes. The aforementioned cosmetic restoration included professional refurbishment of all the Fuchs alloy wheels, in the correct fitment of 7-inch width at the front and 9-inch at the rear. It is also fitted with a full stainless steel Supersprint sports exhaust with dual exit tailpipes.

Inside, this Carrera 3.2 was specified with the desirable sport seats, upholstered in Linen leather and with blue piping to continue the colour-coded theme. The Linen finish continues across the central door panels, transmission tunnel, and gear shift, while the dashboard, door caps and steering wheel are in dark blue. The leather remains in good order throughout, with some wear and discolouration that is visible in the photo gallery. A professional re-connolising treatment could be a good bet for the next owner, to bring it back to an excellent standard.

Ahead of the driver is a full complement of VDO instrument gauges, while other equipment includes climate control, a Blaupunkt Montreux radio and cassette deck, and electrically adjustable front seats. There are no reported faults with any of the features, and no warning lights on the dashboard.

Evidently very well-maintained, throughout the current owner’s tenure in particular, this 911 Carrera 3.2 was last serviced in January 2020 by Porsche specialist Autofarm, when it received an oil and filter change and a winter clean.

Prior to this, it was also seen in August 2019 by Autofarm, for an annual service as well as new track rods, new steering rack bellows, and wheel balancing. The fuel lines and brake pipes were all waxed, and the Supersprint exhaust was fitted - unlocking around 30bhp more from the powertrain. It has been serviced every year while with the seller, at Porsche Centre Bournemouth, Parr Porsche or Autofarm. The gearbox oil has also been changed to higher grade Mobil 1 Dacron fluid, to give an even smoother shift.

In April 2018, the flat-six was upgraded with Patrick Motorsports Web Cam 20/21 camshafts, which were fitted by Ninemeister Porsche. The gearbox selector lever was also enhanced at this point, and once the camshafts were run in it was put on a rolling road to check the power increase. During the previous year, it had also been upgraded with a Cargraphic mass air flow sensor kit and filter at Parr Porsche.

The most recent MOT test was on 7 October 2020 at 75,602 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with recommendations to attend to slightly defective headlight lenses, and an advisory to monitor a minor offside exhaust leak. The wheels are currently fitted with Continental SportContact tyres with around 4-5mm of tread. However, as these tyres are now more than 10 years old, four new and unused Toyo Proxes tyres are included in the sale.

Accompanying this 911 are all of the original books from Porsche, including the stamped maintenance record. There are also lots of previous invoices, and paperwork covering the current ownership in particular.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Cabriolet is a superb modern classic, presented in very good order, and featuring a subtly upgraded powertrain. The vendor reports that this is believed to be one of just 37 original Super Sport Cabriolets originally delivered to the UK, so it can also claim to be a remarkably rare variant.
