1989 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT - G50 GEARBOX

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is an excellent example of the popular modern classic sports car, which has benefited from regular maintenance and is finished in a stylish factory colour scheme. Under the rear engine lid is the 228bhp 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, coupled to the sought-after five-speed Getrag G50 manual transmission. The odometer indicates 85,796 miles from new.

First registered on 1 January 1989, this original right-hand drive example was specified from the factory with the UK dealer ‘Sport Equipment’ package, comprising upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers, lightweight forged alloys, a black lip spoiler at the front and the ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear. Optional equipment includes a limited-slip differential, rear wiper and top-tinted windscreen. There are seven previous registered keepers, and the car is now offered for sale by its current owner who acquired it nearly six years ago.

The bodywork is in in very smart overall condition, with even shut lines and no reported accident damage, with the only blemish noted being a small ding on the driver’s side mirror housing, though this is minor. Believed to be the original factory paint all around the car, the rare Linen Grey Metallic finish is still in great shape. While there are a few nicks and stone chips on the bonnet, front bumper and door mirror housings, this is commensurate with the car’s age and mileage – as are the small patches of corrosion on the edges of the lower front bumper, and the paint flaking on the rear lower bumper.

All of the exterior trim presents very well, as do the light lenses, which are bright and clear. The seller does note that there is a small stone chip on the passenger-side of the windscreen, but this has been present for the past ten years and shows no signs of worsening. The car rides on the correct set of 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, which are in superb condition.

Looking to the interior, Marine Blue leatherette covers the door cards, dashboard, steering wheel and gear lever, and shows very few signs of wear, particularly for its age. The seats are upholstered in Linen leather with Marine Blue piping, and while they show some general aging including creasing to their bolsters and some small scuffs on the leather around the electric height controls, they have held up remarkably well over the years.

This Carrera has also been fitted with rear seat belts, which were a factory option. Other equipment in this example also includes a Blaupunkt Toronto radio and cassette player, and the optional eight-speaker stereo package. The car was also specified with air-conditioning and a tilt-slide steel sunroof, allowing fresh air to be drawn into the cabin during the summer months. All of the interior buttons, switches and electrical items work without fault.

Carefully maintained by Porsche main dealers and specialists, this 911 is in excellent mechanical condition. Its last scheduled maintenance was carried out on 27 May 2020 at 85,779 miles by Iain Gorrie Motor Engineers, Blackpool. A minor service, this included replacement of the engine oil and filters, as well as the rear brake callipers. Prior to this, recent oil services were carried out in May 2019 at 85,334 miles and in May 2018 at 84,453 miles.

The seller also notes that in 2017 a new stainless-steel exhaust system was fitted and the heat exchangers, crossover pipe and oil return pipe were replaced. Prior to their ownership, the clutch, clutch fork and shaft and the starter motor were replaced at 65,953 miles.

The car’s last annual MOT test was conducted on 27 May 2020 at 85,779 miles. Passing after the headlamps’ aim was adjusted, it received three advisory notes for wear to the outer edges of the rear tyres, and a binding nearside rear brake – however the rear callipers have since been replaced.

Its wheels are shod with Contintental SportContact tyres in size 205/55 ZR16 at the front and 225/50 ZR16 at the rear. The front tyres are in good condition, having been replaced at 78,120 miles, however the rears will benefit from replacement in the near future.

Accompanying this Carrera is an extensive service history file, original AFN service books and documents, plus a continuation service book, and two sets of keys with factory immobiliser fobs. In the front boot, the original tool roll and air compressor are still present, and the correct space-saver spare wheel is still mounted beneath the carpet, complete with its Vredestein tyre.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is a smart and fantastically original example of the revered 1980s sports car. Understood to still be finished in its rare paint hue and complementary two-tone interior, it is not only in excellent aesthetic condition, but in fine mechanical order too. When serviced by Porsche specialist Autofarm recently, the team stated that it was “A very good example retaining its original character and specification. To be given serious consideration as a basis for a concours contender”.

Whether it is indeed fully restored to concours quality, or is simply driven and enjoyed as-is, this Carrera 3.2 will provide the excitement and general usability that earlier 911s are known for, and this car would make a fine addition to any collection.
