1988 PORSCHE 928 S4

KEY FACTS

  • A highly original and mechanically well-sorted modern classic GT car, which is ready to enjoy.
  • It is powered by the 320hp 5.0-litre M28/41 V8 engine, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.
  • The car benefits from significant investment in its mechanical condition over the last few years, and has recently completed a 2,000-mile tour of Scotland.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Beyond the developments to the characterful V8 engine, the S4 also featured uprated Brembo front discs, four-piston calipers and the multi-link 'Weissach' rear axle.
  • Specified with the automatic transmission, as the vast majority of 928s were, this S4 is a consummate grand tourer that combines legendary Porsche engineering with comfort and practicality.
  • The previous owner, a qualified aircraft engineer, gave the car a comprehensive mechanical recommissioning after it had been garaged and unused for 12 years. It was acquired by the current owner as a project to take on with their father, and they picked up where the aircraft engineer left off, investing around £5,000 in further improvements.
  • Since then, they have enjoyed around 3,000 miles behind the wheel, with two thirds of that during a tour of Scotland in September 2020, where it proved to be eminently reliable.
  • Factory-fitted equipment includes automatic air-conditioning, electric windows, and a power operated sunroof.
  • The current owner has installed a Blaupunkt Bremen 46 retro-styled head unit, which has a period appearance but provides phone and Bluetooth connectivity.
  • This example is accompanied by various receipts for maintenance work, and original accessories that include the spare-saver spare wheel, jack, and tool kit.
  • The cherished plate ‘A6 ONO’ is included in the sale.

CONDITION

  • The bodywork is reported to be in great condition, with no evidence of any accident damage, and there is a clear HPI report.
  • It is known that the passenger door was repainted to rectify some spots of corrosion during the previous ownership, and that there are a few marks and light scratches as you would expect on a 32-year-old unrestored car with almost all original paint. The black finish presents well all around the car
  • Its 17-inch ‘Cup 1’ alloy wheels are in pristine condition.
  • The black and cream leather interior is in very good order. There is some minor damage to the leather around the base brackets, and near the electric adjustment controls, as well as some expected wear on the bolsters, but otherwise it wears its miles well.
  • The carpeting in the boot area and by the rear seats is presentable, though there are one or two worn-through sections in the front foot wells.
  • The most recent MOT test was on 13 April 2021 at 112,326 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories or defects.
  • The wheels are fitted with Porsche N-rated Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, in size 225/45 ZR17 at the front and 255/40 ZR17 at the rear. They are date-coded to 2018, and still have plenty of tread remaining.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • During the current ownership, some £5,000 has been spent with Porsche specialist Nine Excellence in Haywards Heath. This work has included a rear silencer repair and fabricated mounting plate, fixing leaks at the cam cover, sump and torque converter - the latter requiring removal of the gearbox - plus replacement of the radiator and timing belt, and repairs to the battery cable.
  • The previous owner carried out extensive mechanical recommissioning on their own, including replacement of numerous worn and perished components. The wheels and tyres were renewed and the brakes were refurbished, its air-conditioning system was also converted to R134a specification, and the car was given a full service with fresh oil and fluids for the engine, transmission, differential, brakes, and coolant.
  • Underneath the car, the guard panels below the engine and transmission were repaired, the centre section of the exhaust was repaired, and the heat shields were renewed. The bonnet and boot struts were replaced, and a new lid release mechanism was fitted on the latter.

SUMMARY

This Porsche 928 S4 is a superb modern classic, which Peter Morgan’s buyers’ guide calls “a sure-footed, confident machine with a gorgeous soundtrack”. Having been brought back to good mechanical condition by its previous engineer owner, it has now been further improved and enjoyed by the current keeper, and is now offered to another enthusiast who will no doubt be delighted by its 1980s style, glorious V8 soundtrack, and continent-crossing capabilities.
