1988 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SUPER SPORT CABRIOLET

This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Cabriolet is a rare version of the 911, with only small numbers of the wide-bodied convertible model rolling out of the Porsche factory between 1987 and 1989. A 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six sits under the expansive rear wing, mated to a five-speed G50 manual gearbox. The odometer indicates 148,187, though this is comprised of around 133,000 miles, and approximately 15,000 km (9,320 miles), so the true reading is around 142,000 miles (228,526 km).

The ‘Super Sport Equipment’ package comprised 911 Turbo-style flared wheel arches, a black lip spoiler at the front and the large spoiler at the rear. The Super Sport also carried over the more powerful brakes, other running gear, and the anti-roll bars from the 3.3-litre Turbo, as well as the staggered width 7-inch front and 9-inch rear wheels.

The car was delivered into the United Kingdom, and first registered in October 1988. Its last known registration in the UK was ‘F413 UJH’, and it was subsequently exported at the end of 2010 to Australia. It has been in the current owner’s care for 10 years.

A complete respray was carried out in 2010, and the car still looks superb today, with the paintwork remaining in excellent condition. Panels are straight and free of any obvious imperfections, and exterior trims are in similarly good condition, including the iconic rear spoiler and front splitter. The owner notes that the front bumper was repaired and resprayed in 2016. There is a small scratch on the passenger-side rear wheel arch, along with some very mild stone chipping in the usual road-facing areas.

The black soft top is in good shape, but does show some signs of wear in high-contact areas such as on the driver’s side door entry. Its rides on 16-inch Fuchs alloys, which are in good condition, with an appealing patina. An additional engine cover without the rear wing is available to go along with the car.

The 911’s grey leather interior is in good order, with only modest signs of use and light wear in areas such as the driver’s seat, steering wheel and interior of the driver’s door around the handle, lock and window controls. The driver and passenger seat bases were re-trimmed in 2016. A period Porsche Club Sport style steering wheel is fitted to the car, along with an aftermarket head unit. The original wheel is also available if required.

Rennsport East Fremantle carried out a service in January, 2021. Prior to that, oil service and filter changes were carried out in 2018 and 2016, and an electrical service was also carried out during the latter, with numerous items replaced at that time, so the controls and switches all work correctly. The 2016 service also included a more significant mechanical refresh, with a new clutch, new brake discs, pads, and with all four callipers overhauled.

The original stamped UK service book from 1988 to 2010 is included with the car, as well as servicing invoices from 2010 onwards. Other original Porsche manuals and documentation will also be included, as shown in the gallery.

The car passed a roadworthiness test in 2016. A minor oil weep from the cam feed oil line was noted and fixed on the same day, before the car passed with no further advisories. Tyres are Toyo Proxes T1 Sport from 2016, with less than 5,000 miles on them.

This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Super Sport Cabriolet is an original, well-maintained and cherished classic sports car, which offers the legendary 911 driving experience with the added benefit of being able to drop the top and enjoy the song of its flat-six in the open air. It looks great in its recently resprayed Slate Grey metallic paintwork, and the Super Sport Equipment variation adds rarity to the equation, ensuring that it will stand out from the crowd.
