1988 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT TARGA

This 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport Targa is an excellent, unmolested example of the desirable Targa-topped sports car. Under the engine lid is a 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, coupled to the desirable five-speed G50 manual transmission with hydraulic clutch. The odometer indicates 83,625 miles.

Specified from the factory with the UK dealer ‘Sport Equipment’ package, this comprised upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers, lightweight forged alloys, a black lip spoiler at the front and the ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear. This car was also ordered with the deeper-bolstered sport seats.

First registered on 19 October 1988, this 3.2 Sport Targa has been in the care of the vendor for the last three years, during which time it has been subject to a major service and overhaul at a cost of some £12,000. The appropriate cherished registration ‘KFC 911’ is also included in the sale.

There is no known prior damage to the car, and all of the panels appear with flush shut lines and even gaps. The Grand Prix white paintwork is in fantastic condition, and is believed to be largely original throughout. The vendor notes that both the front and rear impact bumpers have been refurbished, but that the rest of the paint is believed to be the factory finish. As you would expect, there are a few minor stone chips and marks, which are commensurate with the age of the vehicle. All four of the correct 16-inch Fuchs wheels are in good condition.

The interior is also in well-preserved, highly original condition. Equipped with the desirable sport seats, the cabin’s upholstery has a minor tear in the offside rear seat, but otherwise it all looks very smart for its age. There is modest creasing and some typical wear on the driver’s seat bolsters. Of particular note is the vinyl-covered dash which is free from cracking, as are the tops of the door cards. Everything works exactly as it should with no warning lights, though the original stereo has been replaced with a more modern Sony offering.

The most recent service was carried out in January 2019 by 9M Porsche specialist at 83,421 miles. During this service, the engine was removed from the vehicle and fitted with new tappets, hoses, oil pipes, new filters, and it was given a full fluid change. In addition to this, the engine bay was fully washed down, and a new stainless steel exhaust system was fitted – with the total cost for the work carried out amounting to £12,177. Prior to this, the car was serviced in June 2016 at around 83,000 miles and in June 2015 at 82,587 miles.

The most recent MOT test took place on 11 August 2020, and resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. All four tyres have good levels of tread remaining, but are now approaching five years old. With the vehicle are the original Porsche handbooks and manuals, stamped service record with a mixture of OPC and independent specialist stamps, numerous old invoices, and past MOT certificates.

This relatively low-mileage Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport Targa benefits from a recent engine-out service and overhaul, and it offers superb year-round driving potential. A fine modern classic with its characterful air-cooled engine and desirable late-model G50 transmission; this would make a strong addition to any Porsche enthusiast’s stable.
