1988 BMW (E30) 325i - SINGLE FAMILY OWNERSHIP

This BMW 325i is a remarkably original and honest example of the E30-generation saloon, presented in smart condition and in single family ownership from new. Under the bonnet is the 2.5-litre M20B25 straight-six, producing around 168bhp, driving the rear wheels via the desirable five-speed manual transmission. The odometer indicates just 51,363 miles from new.

An original right-hand drive example, this 325i was first registered in January 1988 and purchased from BMW dealer Leslie H. Trainer in Swansea, by the seller’s late father. While the log book lists two prior keepers, the car was initially registered to the first owner’s company before ownership was transferred to his own name in 1999. Earlier this year, the cherished E30-series BMW was put into the seller’s mother’s name.

Free of any accident damage, the handsome Claus Luthe-designed bodywork appears to be straight and solid overall, with the only panel damage being a minor dent on the roof near the rear window and another on the passenger door. The car has always been garaged when not in use, which goes some way to accounting for its impressive condition.

Described by the seller as being in fair condition, the original, factory-applied black paintwork is free of any substantial damage; however there are small blemishes on the roof and bonnet that may be caused by tree sap. There are also minor scuffs on the bumpers, nearside rear quarter panel, and stone chips to the bonnet, nose and fuel-filler flap.

While there are general swirl marks and small scratches across the body, their appearance would be greatly reduced by a thorough machine polish. The trim, badging and rubber seals are all in very good order and the light lenses are clear, bright and free of any cracks.

Demonstrating this 325i’s incredible originality, its first set of dealer-fitted number plates are still present, accompanied by the dealer’s sticker in the rear window and the original tax disc holder on the windscreen. The car rides on its original ‘bottle cap’ 14-inch alloy wheels, which are in generally good condition, save for some nicks and scratches.

Moving to the interior, this BMW’s factory-fitted grey cloth upholstery presents superbly, with no rips or tears to the front or rear seats. The plastic and vinyl trim is also in great shape, though there is some discolouration to the lower driver’s side of the dashboard, where it meets the door. Grey carpeting is fitted throughout, and while the seller notes some minor soiling in the driver’s footwell, it is otherwise very smart, especially for a car of this age.

Modestly equipped, the cabin features manual windows and a manually operated tilt-and-slide sunroof. Impressively, the original Pioneer radio cassette player is still fitted, however the volume knob is missing. All of the car’s buttons and switches work correctly, but the service inspection light is illuminated, so it is now due another maintenance visit.

Much of the car’s service history is not recorded, but it is believed that the clutch was replaced in the last few years, and a new exhaust system has been fitted at some stage.

Its last MOT test was conducted on 2 September 2019 at 51,227 miles, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories, a testament to this 325i’s impressive mechanical health.

The wheels are fitted with a matching set of Firestone Firehawk TZ200 tyres in size 195/65 R14. All four are in good condition and with plenty of tread.

Accompanying this BMW is its original document wallet, owner’s handbook, a number of past MOT certificates and the factory tool kit – which is almost complete.

This BMW 325i is a smart modern classic, with low mileage and owned by the same family from new. Mechanically in good order, its paint and bodywork require only minor attention to bring them up to a very good standard – but the car is ready to enjoy on the road as-is. Solid, unmolested examples of the E30 are becoming increasingly rare, making this 325i a compelling proposition.
