1988 BMW 635CSi - ALPINA B7 TURBO RECREATION

Designed by Paul Bracq, the E24 BMW 6-series was the Bavarian company’s sporting GT car, which held its own on the road and on the race track. During its long production run, Alpina gave the model a significant upgrade, resulting in the Alpina B7 Turbo.

With a turbocharged BMW 3.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing up to 300bhp with its variable boost control, the B7 Turbo took the promise of Bracq’s design and gave it significantly enhanced performance.

This 1988 BMW 635CSi pays homage to the powerful upgraded coupe, with a genuine turbocharged 3.5-litre Alpina straight-six, Motec ECU, the five-speed manual transmission from an E24 M6, and 18-inch Alpina wheels. The car is also equipped with a limited-slip differential, and the disc brakes from a period BMW 7 series.

Originally delivered into the UK market, this car was brought into Australia as a personal import in 1997. The car was enhanced with an upgrade program, with the aim of creating the ultimate ‘shark nose’ 6 series driver’s car.

With no known prior body damage, the exterior presents very well, with only minor imperfections and nicks in the grey finish, as shown in the photo gallery. All of the body trims are in good order, and the genuine Alpina 18-inch wheels are in superb condition. Its front indicator lenses have been changed to transparent items, and there is a very small hairline crack in one fog light.

Inside, the smart appearance of the leather seats defies the car’s age and mileage, and it is almost certain that the covers have been re-trimmed in the past. Factory-fitted features include cruise control, electric seats, electric windows, a sliding sunroof, and air-conditioning.

While officially this is not a B7 Turbo Coupe, it benefits from that car’s turbocharged motor, plus a number of other upgrades to enhance its performance and driveability. The E24 model is increasingly popular to add to ‘young timer’ collections, and this particular BMW 635CSi is a customised take on the ‘shark nose’ classic, which is sure to bring a big smile to its next owner’s face whenever they explore is power on the open road.
