1987 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT TARGA

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa with Sport Equipment is a very smart example of an iconic 1980s sports car, with a desirable specification and well-documented service history. Its engine is the 228bhp 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, which is driven through the rear wheels via the five-speed Getrag G50 manual transmission. The odometer indicates 126,947 miles from new.

An original right-hand-drive UK market car, this 911 Targa was specified from the factory with the UK dealer ‘Sport Equipment’ package, comprising upgraded Bilstein shock absorbers, lightweight forged alloys, a black lip spoiler at the front and the ‘whale tail’ spoiler at the rear. It was also fitted with Sport seats, rear wiper, velour boot carpet, and a Blaupunkt Toronto stereo.

Supplied in May 1987 via City of London main dealer Charles Follett, the first registered keeper was the Kleinwort Benson investment bank - so this 911 really was part of the era of excess. There are 11 previous registered keepers on the log book, which is not particularly unusual for a popular collector car like the Carrera 3.2, and it has been owned by the seller for around two-and-a-half years. He has enjoyed some 1,500 miles behind the wheel.

The bodywork presents well, with no signs of accident damage, and the photos of the underside indicate that the sills and floors are in excellent condition. Its Grand Prix White paint was refreshed during the previous owner’s tenure, and appears to have been done to a very good standard, though there is no receipt on file for this work. There are small bubbles on the inner door sills that have not become any worse in the last few years, and a few minor scratches around the body panels.

All of the light lenses are free of cracks and chips, and the door and window rubbers are generally in good order. The car rides on correct 16-inch Fuchs alloys, with satin black centres and polished rims. There are only very minor marks to the wheels, as shown in the photo gallery.

Inside, the black vinyl and leather upholstery looks smart, though the seller does note that there is some minor damage to the finish on the front passenger seat base cushion. It is equipped with the electrically adjustable sport seats, which have only modest wear on the bolsters, while the rear seats are in excellent condition. The dashboard and door cards present well, and the rest of the trim is highly original. It even retains the factory-fitted Blaupunkt Toronto SQR 46 stereo. Its FM radio function is inoperative as no aerial is fitted to the car, but the cassette playback works well. The only other electrical issue noted by the seller is that the boot and engine bay area lights are not functioning correctly.

Its last scheduled maintenance was in June 2018 at 125,707 miles, carried out by Greatworth Classics near Banbury. This consisted of an engine oil and oil filter change, as well as fresh spark plugs, a new distributor cap and ignition leads, engine breather hoses, a new idle control valve, and refurbishment of the injectors. The front brake hoses were replaced, and the brake fluid was changed.

The previous owner had the engine rebuilt by a local air-cooled specialist in February 2016, but did very little mileage in the following two years and the car was sold to the current owner, down on power and running poorly. Greatworth Classics carried out the service detailed above, and subsequently gave the engine a full inspection, which included checking the head studs and carrying out leak-down and compression tests. These revealed that the engine was back in very good health and it is now running as it should. The technicians identified that poorly trimmed new carpets had hampered the throttle travel slightly, which was causing the temporary power deficit.

Other work carried out during the seller’s ownership includes new engine and gearbox bushes, and new cables and springs for the heater control boxes in March 2020. The front shock absorbers were renewed in December 2017. Its clutch was last replaced in December 2015 at approximately 125,500 miles.

The most recent MOT test was on 4 November 2019 at 126,912 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. The wheels are shod in 205/55 R16 budget tyres at the front and 225/50 R16 Nexen tyres at the rear. There is still around 7mm of tread remaining all round, but they are approximately 10 years old, so would benefit from replacement on the basis of age.

Accompanying the car is the original dark red wallet, housing the driver’s manual, stamped guarantee and maintenance record, and other user guides - including for the Blaupunkt stereo. There is also a raft of receipts for the service history, some which date back to 1994, and MOT certificates back to 1993. An official Porsche Certificate of Production is also present.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa with Sport Equipment is one of the most user-friendly and enjoyable performance cars of its era. It benefits from comprehensive recent engine work to ensure it is running superbly, and it has been cared for by numerous marque specialists throughout its life. This is a great opportunity to acquire a well-maintained classic 911 that is packed with 1980s charm.
