1987 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT TARGA

This 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport Targa is a fantastic example of the modern classic sports car, which is finished in a rare factory colour scheme and benefits from a number of desirable options. Under the engine cover is a 228bhp 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, which drives the rear wheels via the sought-after ‘G50’ five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 124,152 miles from new.

First registered in November 1987, this 1988 model year G-Series Targa was specified with period-perfect Cassis Red metallic paintwork and a maroon velour and leatherette interior. It also features electrically adjustable seats and 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels. The seller acquired the car five years ago.

Fully resprayed in its original hue of Cassis Red metallic in 2015, the bodywork remains in great shape, with even shut lines and no evidence of prior road accident damage. The ‘kidney bowls’ were replaced when the car was repainted. Its paintwork is also in excellent condition, with a smooth and glossy appearance around the car and only a few small marks to speak of, including a slight blemish on the passenger-side front wing and a small scratch on the driver’s-side headlight bezel.

The exterior trim presents well, however there are some minor blemishes on the black Targa roll hoop and a small split in the top’s vinyl covering, while there are also some minor cracks to the plastic tail light lenses. This classic 911 rides on its original 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels with polished rims and black ‘petals’, which present well.

On stepping into the cabin, you are transported back to the late 1980s by the powered comfort seats, which are clad in their original maroon velour upholstery with white pinstripes. The vendor notes that one of the seat bolsters has been restitched, and they remain in excellent condition. The matching maroon vinyl which is applied to the seat backs, upper door cards and dashboard wears its age equally well.

The original Blaupunkt stereo has been replaced by a Grundig radio/cassette player, however the vendor states that this does not function. Otherwise, all of the car’s buttons, switches and electrical items work as they should, and there are no warning lights displayed on the dashboard.

This open-top Porsche’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in March 2021 at 124,137 miles by independent specialist Northway Porsche. It included a major service with fresh spark plugs and adjustment of the valve clearances, as well as a new ‘S’ tank-to-cooler oil pipe, adjustment of the alternator belt, and new rear tyres. Prior to this, Northway Porsche saw the car in July 2019 at 123,753 miles, when technicians replaced the fuel lines and the dipped/main beam headlight switch at a total cost of £1,578.

Prior to this, Northway Porsche has serviced the car on a nearly annual basis in recent years. The car’s engine was also fully rebuilt in May 2005 at 113,582 miles, which included replacement of its pistons, piston rings, valve guides, timing chain, chain tensioner, gaskets and seals. Furthermore, the seller notes that the clutch was replaced approximately three years ago, and a new fuse box was also fitted.

This 911’s last MOT test was conducted on 5 March 2021 at 124,146 miles, resulting in a first-time pass without a single advisory. Its front tyres are nearly new with ample tread, and the rear tyres have just been replaced.

The car will be accompanied by maintenance invoices dating from 1996 to the present day, and its MOT test certificates from June 1992 onwards.

Finished in a sensational factory colour scheme and presented in impressive condition throughout, this Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport Targa is an excellent example of the breed. Benefitting from an engine rebuild and routinely serviced by specialists, this appealing 911 would make a fine addition to any collection.
