1987 BMW (E30) M3 - LHD

This BMW M3 is a superb example of the iconic E30 generation model, accompanied by an extensive history file and presented in excellent order throughout. Under the bonnet is a numbers-matching 2.3-litre naturally aspirated S14 inline-four, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 179,537 km (111,519 miles), which is fully documented, and with invoices on file totalling in excess of £35,000.

Initially registered in September 1987, this is an original German market car, which had two private owners there up to 1997. It was subsequently exported to the UK, where it was re-registered in July that year as E929 CRM. In February 2018, it was then exported to Ireland, where it is currently registered on number plate 87 D 120059. It has been with the current owner for the last three years. Given that the car has been previously UK registered, re-registering it again should be a straightforward process.

While it remains in its original factory colour scheme, the car has been upgraded with M3 Evolution II features, including the front spoiler, brake ducts, cooling vent, larger alloys, and the M-Technic steering wheel.

There is no known prior damage to any of the panels, presenting with straight and smooth bodywork. Its Alpine White finish has previously been resprayed, and the condition is described by the vendor as excellent, with him noting only a stone chip on the front bumper by the right-hand side indicator. It rides on the upgraded 16-inch BBS alloy wheels, which retain the correct finish. There is some slight surface marring on the rims, but no kerbing damage.

Inside, the upholstery is believed to be all original, and is in superb order. The grey cloth is accented by houndstooth pattern centre panels, and there is only modest wear visible on the normal high-contact points, with no rips or other damage to the fabric or vinyl. It is equipped with electric windows, a powered sliding sunroof, heated front seats, and a rear sunblind. There are no electrical faults, and all of the switchgear works as it should.

The car was last serviced in December 2019 at 176,111 km by Cardock Classics in Kildare. This comprised a full engine oil service, as well as renewal of the oil cooler radiator, propshaft coupling, and indicator relay. More recently, in 2020 the M3 has received new front shock absorbers, new OEM coil springs on all four corners, a new ABS control unit, and new front and rear brake pad sensors.

In October 2017, the rear axle was removed and refurbished, with new polybushes, top mounts and stabiliser link bars, and with the front-to-back fuel lines also renewed at the same time. A fastidiously detailed Excel document accompanies the car - and is previewed in the photo gallery - showing the comprehensive maintenance history from new.

The last MOT test in the UK was on 5 February 2018 at 168,754 km, just before it was exported to Ireland, when it achieved a first-time pass with no advisories whatsoever. If purchased and imported back to the UK, it will need a new MOT certificate prior to taking to the road again. The vendor reports that the Maxxis tyres on all four corners have around 5mm of tread.

Accompanying the car is an original owner’s handbook and other literature, and a substantial history file containing around 200 documents pertaining to previous ownership, MOT testing, and maintenance. The original German registration document from 1987 is also present, which confirms the matching numbers of the chassis and engine.

This E30-generation BMW M3 is a striking example of a legendary performance car. The vendor describes the paintwork as particularly impressive, and the highly original cabin evidently still looks superb. Not to be confused with less well-documented examples, the spreadsheet accompanying this example provides a remarkably clear view of its history dating back to 1987, making this a wonderful prospective addition to any collection of BMWs or iconic modern classics.

Please note: as the car is currently located in Ireland, the vendor is happy to include transport to England, Wales, or the southern part of Scotland as part of the sale at no additional cost.

The description of this auction lot is, to the best of the seller's knowledge, accurate and not misleading. Collecting Cars requests a range of detail about the lot from the seller, and performs a level of due diligence through HPI checks and MOT history where available. However, bidders must satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of the description, and conduct any research they feel is necessary before committing to a bid. Please see our Terms and Conditions for full details.

As this car is not UK-registered, it cannot be run through Collecting Cars’ standard online HPI check process. However, its historic HPI data covering the period from 1997 to 2018 is clear of any markers for damage, theft or finance.
