1987 BMW (E30) 325iX

This BMW 325iX is a rare modern classic two-door saloon, offered from 33-year private ownership and remaining highly original throughout. Under the bonnet is the 2.5-litre M20 straight-six engine producing around 168bhp, coupled with a four-speed automatic transmission and with BMW’s very first production all-wheel drive application.

The 325iX was equipped with flared wheel arches from the factory, and was the first BMW model to feature all-wheel drive. It received rave reviews in the press, praising not only its all-weather grip but also its enhanced traction through corners.

This German-delivery car has had just one owner for the last 33 years, and the odometer shows 185,541 km. It has been a cherished part of a large and impressive private collection. It is fitted with an M Technic front lip spoiler, which is thought to have been installed when new. The car is currently not registered, and would likely require some recommissioning as well as the subsequent TÜV inspection before returning to the road.

The bodywork is in good order, and in the past it has been given a full professional respray to a good standard, now presenting in fair condition for its age. There are some small surface scratches and scuffs, though it could be brought back to an impressive appearance with just a good machine polish. As an early E30, it features the chrome bumper trims, though these are covered in ‘pimples’ and some surface rust, and look patinated with age. The vendor notes that there is a small spot of rust on the lower edge of the left rear wheel arch, and another behind the left front wheel arch. There is also some general corrosion inside the wheel arches, on some parts of the undercarriage, and on the exhaust box and tailpipes.

Inside, the upholstery remains entirely original, with the exception of the driver’s seat outer bolster, which has been re-trimmed due to wear. The black vinyl backings and grey fabric facings are in excellent condition for their age, with no undue wear or heavy discolouration. Its door cards and headlining present well, and factory-fitted equipment includes electric windows, heated front seats, air-conditioning, and a BMW Bavaria stereo head unit. There are no known electrical faults or switchgear issues, apart from inoperative fog lights.

The car has been stored off the road for 10 years, but it fired up immediately and drove out of the garage without fault when photographed for this listing. Nevertheless, it will be prudent to carry out a recommissioning service prior to inspection and re-registration. Before taking it off the road in 2010, the car was given a more detailed overhaul, with some new axle shaft seals and new brake lines, among other things.

All four winter tyres have plenty of tread, but would benefit from being replaced as they are date-coded to 2009. It is accompanied by the vehicle registration certificate, plus original accessories including the tool kit.

This BMW 325iX is a lesser-seen variant of the popular E30-generation 3 Series. Equipped with BMW’s first all-wheel drive system, and as a more sought-after two-door saloon model, this is a collectible modern classic that also represents great value for money. Offered from 33-year single private ownership, this is a car that would be straightforward to improve with some cosmetic attention, but could also make a highly capable daily driver or winter weather car.
