1986 PORSCHE 928 S - MANUAL

KEY FACTS

  • A very presentable modern classic in the desirable ‘S2.5’ specification, which remains highly original.
  • Under the long bonnet of this Porsche is a 4.7-litre naturally aspirated, water-cooled V8 engine producing over 300bhp that drives the rear wheels via a dog-leg five-speed manual transmission.
  • Devised by Porsche as the car to succeed the 911, the 928 offers an intoxicating blend of performance, poise and practicality.
  • An exceptionally rare model; believed to be one of only 25 UK-delivered ‘S2.5’ cars with the manual transmission.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • As a 1986 model year car, this 928 left the factory in what has become known as ‘S2.5’ specification, with most of the S2’s features, but with the upgraded shock absorbers, larger Brembo brakes and four-piston callipers that would be found in the S4 from 1987 onwards – but retaining the classic S2 body shape.
  • The ‘S2.5’ also had revisions to the cylinder head and intake, and simpler fuel injection and ignition control systems. Revisions were also made to the floor pan, battery box, and rear crossmember.
  • This particular car was also specified with the wider rear track with wheel spacers (code 415).
  • Specified in iconic Guards Red, the paintwork contrasts well with the classic black leather interior complete with red piping.
  • Factory equipment includes air-conditioning and heated seats. The original Blaupunkt Toronto stereo resides in the dashboard and this S2 was specified with an electric sunroof and top-tinted windscreen.
  • Accompanying the car are the original books and stamped service record, a complete tool kit, and the space-saver spare wheel.

CONDITION

  • The vendor states that the vehicle was repainted 15 years ago – for which a receipt is included – and it has stood the test of time well. There are some blemishes around the car including light bubbling near the fuel filler-flap. The trim on the driver’s door also sits slightly proud, but overall it presents in good order.
  • The interior is described as being in excellent condition, with no notable areas of damage or heavy wear to the seats, carpets or dashboard.
  • The air-conditioning is not functioning, and while the automatic tailgate is operational, it can be temperamental.
  • The most recent MOT test was carried out on 28 May 2021 at 138,100 miles and resulted in a first-time pass without advisories.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • The car was last serviced in June 2019 at 137,800 miles and consisted of an oil and filter change.
  • In addition to the stamped record below, the car comes with an extensive file of invoices and past MOT test certificates.

SUMMARY

Emerging from the long shadow cast by its 911 sibling, the 928 is now rightly recognised as a great modern classic GT car. Capable of dispatching long distances with impressive comfort, it also boasts ample power and tidy handling. The appeal of this particular car is enhanced by its very rare manual transmission, as well as its bulging history file, so this is an opportunity not to be missed.
