1986 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 is a 1987 model year car, first registered in the UK, and which came to Australia in 2003. It is equipped with a naturally aspirated 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, with both electronic fuel injection and ignition, partnered with the desirable G50 five-speed manual gearbox. The odometer shows 177,986km, although it is estimated to have covered approximately 200,000km.

Finished in the original eye catching shade of Guards Red, it is believed to have been at least partially repainted at some point prior to the current owner’s purchase three years ago. Although the car is thought to have never been in any accidents, the external surfaces of the front boot lid and rear engine cover have been repainted. There are some stone chips towards the front end and very light scratches over the rest of the body, but the panels sit straight with even gaps throughout, and the doors, engine cover and boot lid all shut with a satisfying and solid noise.

The original engine lid is included, which allows for a return to the standard 911 silhouette if desired, minus the ’whale tail’ as currently fitted. The engine lid currently fitted also has mounting holes for an even larger 930 Turbo spoiler. The factory-fitted electric sunroof is fully functional.

There are some minor areas of rust appearing, most notably under the left headlight, the right front inner and outer guard (at the edge of the boot lid), and beside both rear bumper over-riders. One front guard has had a rust repair with new metal welded in behind the front wheel, but this is not visible from the exterior. All glazing and lights are in good condition, with no cracks, scuffs or scratches. The boot is clean and contains the original space saver spare wheel and Vredestein tyre, along with the factory toolkit roll and compressor.

Moving inside, the almost entirely original black leather and velour black trim is in fair condition for the age, with only the carpeting having been replaced (though the original carpeting is also included). There is some wear and fading on the driver’s seat and some fading also on the front passenger seat, but new front seat covers and bases are included, and the rear seats are in good condition. A small tear is present in the headlining above the driver, and the lining itself is coming away around the sunroof. With the exception of the odometer and trip meter, all gauges and instruments are in working condition, with no known faults or active warning lights. The electrical systems are also in working condition, but some of the rear window demister lines are inoperative.

At around three years old, all four tyres are in good condition, with each wrapped around lovely unblemished Fuchs replica alloy wheels. The original set of Fuchs wheels is also included, but they show some minor imperfections.

The only non-original items fitted are the Monty exhaust system, and the recently installed Classic Retrofit Electrocooler air-conditioning system. It is fully functional, blowing cool air, but could be tidied up to neaten the wiring and minor details.

Throughout its life, this 911 Carrera 3.2 has been well maintained and regularly serviced, documented in a detailed file. Included is the original delivery paperwork and owner’s manuals as seen in the photographs, along with a folio of its various service and maintenance documentation. There is a noise at idle when the clutch is released, diagnosed as an input shaft bearing. It would be advised to change this when the clutch is replaced, but the clutch still has plenty of life remaining.

The next owner could either keep this modern classic as-is to enjoy in its present form, or the car could be treated to some sympathetic cosmetic refurbishment to bring its condition to a truly impressive standard. Overall though, this Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 is a smart example of the popular and typically reliable sports car, which would make a great weekend driver or road trip companion.
