1985 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is a beautifully presented example of an iconic 1980s sports car, benefiting from a restoration nine years ago. Under the engine lid is the 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 128,726 miles from new, though it has covered only around 7, 000 miles since its comprehensive refurbishment.

An original C16-code UK car, it was supplied to its first owner in January 1985 by JCT600. He kept the car for the next eight years, returning to JCT600 regularly for servicing and maintenance. It has been owned by the seller for nearly 10 years, who commissioned the restoration work, and who has subsequently thoroughly enjoyed the car. He has also taken it to numerous club meets and national events. The such a well-known example of the model that The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club asked the owner for it to appear on the club stand at the NEC Classic Car Show in both 2015 and 2017.

In 2010, a full body refurbishment was carried out, which included new sills and kidney bowls, and repairs to the inner and outer wing. One of the front wings had previously been replaced and therefore remained in excellent condition. There are photos in the history file taken during the renovation that shows the extent of corrosion, and subsequently the good quality metalwork and repairs by an expert who has restored over a dozen ‘impact bumper’ 911s. With the exception of the roof, the whole car was refinished in the original colour of Guards Red, complete with ‘Carrera’ decals in black. The seller notes one stone chip on the bonnet that has been touched in, as well as a tiny patch of paint bubbling around the window frame on the scuttle, which has remained the same size for the last few years.

Following the body and paint restoration, the car was fitted with new front and rear bumper bellows, as well as a new ‘bumper smile’ joining trim at the front. The chin spoiler was refurbished, and new rubber seals were installed around the windows and doors. An offside lens cover was replaced, as well as the nearside washer jet. Today, all of the trims present superbly, as the detailed set of photos shows. It rides on 16-inch Fuchs wheels, with a staggered setup of a 6-inch width at the front and 7-inch at the rear. The alloys are all in very good order having been repainted using the correct Wurth paint and retaining the original anodised factory finish.

Inside, the seats are trimmed in a combination of black leather with pinstripe cloth centre panels. They are the original items, and have retained their shape and colour well, with the only damage being a split across the cloth on the driver’s seat base along one of the seams, which the seller believes would be relatively straightforward to repair. During the seller’s ownership, the driver’s side window switch has been replaced along with a brand-new cigarette lighter. At some stage a genuine Club Sport steering wheel has been fitted. He notes that not all the electric adjustment for the seats currently works and that the fresh air fans are inoperative - however there are replacement items for the latter included in the sale.

Mechanically, this Carrera 3.2 Sport is reported to be in very good order, with a history file that demonstrates regular maintenance over the years. Approximately 10 years ago the Motronic ECU was replaced, and since then a new DME relay has been installed, and the fuel pump has been renewed. It was also fitted with a new pre-silencer, a Dansk stainless steel exhaust system, and new wheel bearings.

Its gearbox was rebuilt at 84,964 miles, and the seller states that the shift is still firm and precise. He also states that the car starts on the button and pulls very strongly, without using any oil, performing the way a 911 should. The most recent scheduled maintenance was in May 2019 at 128,509 miles when it received a basic oil service, while other recent services were in April 2017 at 127,186 miles and May 2015 at 126,011 miles.

The most recent MOT test was carried out on 11 July 2020 at 128,767 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with only one advisory regarding slight binding on the offside rear brake due to lack of use. The wheels are shod in Continental SportContact items at the rear, and Maxxis tyres at the front. There is ample tread on all four corners, though the front tyres would probably benefit from replacing on the basis of age.

Accompanying the car is a detailed history folder, containing a raft of paperwork for previous service work, as well as numerous old MOT certificates. All of the original handbooks are also present, including the stamped maintenance record.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is a smart example of one of the most accessible performance cars of its era. It presents in excellent cosmetic condition, thanks to the recent restoration work, and the interior remains almost entirely original. These cars offer an appealing entry point to air-cooled 911 ownership, and this car is ready for its next owner to take out and enjoy on the open road.
