1985 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 2.7 RS REPLICA

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Replica is a smartly presented and remarkably faithful homage to one of the most iconic 1970s sports cars. Based on a later Carrera, under the engine lid is a 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, producing 228bhp in stock form, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential.

First registered in May 1985 as an original Carrera 3.2, there are now nine previous registered keepers on the log book. It is believed that it was initially used as a demonstrator for a Porsche main dealer. The seller has owned the car for the last six years. Its current odometer reading is not accurate, and it is understood that the car has covered around 230,000 miles from new.

An impressive amount of attention to detail has been employed in transforming the car from its original 1980s aesthetic into the current Carrera 2.7 RS appearance. The bumpers, engine lid and boot lid were all ‘backdated’, and the car was fitted with a ducktail rear spoiler complete with an anodised grille and ‘2.7’ badging, and the correct style chrome window surrounds and chrome door handles. The front horn grilles are finished in black, and it also has opening rear quarter windows. Overall, it is a superb recreation of the 2.7 RS aesthetic.

Today, the bodywork and paint presents in excellent condition. The seller notes some very slight blemishes on the rear arches and quarter panels, plus some small stone chips that have been touched in on the front bumper and bonnet. Otherwise, the Guards Red finish is in good order, with a deep shine. It is equipped with a sunroof, which opens and closes as it should, as well as quick-release rubber straps for the engine lid. The staggered 16-inch alloys are reported to be genuine Fuchs items, and they are in very good condition.

In the cabin, this 911 is fitted with a pair of GTS seats that have been upholstered in half leather and half houndstooth cloth, at a cost of around £4,000. The rear seats have been deleted to save even more weight. The seller reports only very minor wear to the interior plastics in places, as well as some marks to the aftermarket steering wheel spokes. There are also lightweight door panels installed, which mimic those used in the genuine RS model, and the headlining has been changed to the 1970s style off-white material. The carpet finishes and door sill trims are also in the correct RS style. It has no warning lights on the dashboard, and no known faults with any of the switchgear or electrics.

The last scheduled maintenance was in April 2019 at 81,022 miles by marque specialist, Williams Crawford. This included renewal of the engine oil and filter, air filter, brake fluid, and with replacement pipes from the reservoir to the master cylinder. Prior to this, it had another recent service in May 2017, which also incorporated replacement of the spark plugs, handbrake shoes, and air filter; and in March 2015 when the fan belt, timing chain feed pipe, and rear drop links were all renewed.

During the current ownership, the clutch cable has been replaced, along with the distributor cap and rotor arm. Four new Bilstein sport shock absorbers have been fitted, along with new tyres. The car has received a new washer pump, rear sunroof seal, a rebuilt alternator, and replacement headlight lenses. The heater and DME relays have also been replaced.

The most recent MOT test was on 26 May 2020 at an indicated 85,736 miles, when it passed with an advisory regarding wear to the rear brake discs. The tyres are all recently fitted Avon ZV7s, which the seller states have at least 4mm of tread remaining.

Accompanying this 911 is an original handbook, and a vast amount of paperwork contained in two box files. It details an extensive service history, as well as the work done on the car to transform it into the RS replica, and the respray in Guards Red. The stamped maintenance record is also present.

This Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Replica is an excellent tribute to one of the most revered classic collector cars, with a faithful and head-turning exterior appearance. The conversion work is said to have been completed to a very high standard, and is very well documented. It has been cared for in recent years by leading marque specialists, and is reported to be in fine mechanical order, ready to relish on the road.

All cars and motorbikes on Collecting Cars are run through an online HPI check. This vehicle shows no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and has no finance owing.
