1985 BMW 635CSi

A classic grand tourer with modern usability, this BMW ‘E24’ 635CSI combines elegant coupe styling with the powerful 3.4-litre M30 inline six-cylinder engine, coupled to a smooth four-speed automatic transmission. It remains highly original with some tasteful period upgrades, and presents in excellent condition after receiving a partial restoration in 2015.

Originally delivered to the UK, it remained there for eight years before being exported to Australia in 1993. It has now covered 141,025 miles from new.

Finished in Cosmos Blue Metallic, the 635CSI’s handsome bodywork is in good order. The vendor reports that some recent minor repair work was carried out to the front offside nose panel area, but it was evidently completed to a good standard. Its paintwork presents very well, with a smooth and glossy shine across the panels. The 635 sits on a set of period-correct ‘Fondmetal’ 16-inch wheels, a popular upgrade in period.

The BMW’s cabin presents in wonderful original condition. Indigo Blue carpets sit below manually operated sport seats, trimmed in matching Indigo Blue leather. The rear seats are in superb order, and the front seats show only mild creasing from age, with the bolsters holding their shape well. Across the rest of the interior, the door cards and dashboard trims appear in great shape, with a smart patina on the three-spoke sport steering wheel.

Factory-fitted features include electric windows, cruise control, air-conditioning, on-board computer, and heated rear screen. The majority of buttons and switchgear are working and in perfect condition, except for a recent fault with the onboard trip computer which is currently inoperative. The vendor notes that the ignition barrel is sometimes stiff and requires extra pressure to turn. Its original sunroof is in place, and is in working order, though could use adjustment to the runner alignment to ensure it opens and shuts as smoothly as possible.

The vehicle comes with a good amount of service history and original books showing maintenance throughout its life, and partial restoration in 2015. The most recent service was at LA Automotive in March 2021, where a minor oil service and mechanical check-over was performed. The vehicle was found to be in good health, though will likely require a wheel speed sensor at the next service due to an intermittent ABS fault showing at speeds above 30KM/H.

Prior to the minor service, in 2020, major servicing was also performed by LA Automotive where the BMW received new ignition leads and a distributor cap. Other maintenance items such as brake pads, front end bushings, ball joints and the suspension drop link assembly have also recently been replaced.

With a spacious and well-appointed interior, this BMW 635CSI makes a compelling long distance tourer, with ample power and torque from the straight-six motor. Thanks to impressive levels of care and maintenance, it should prove a dependable modern classic for years to come.
