1983 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 3.2 SPORT

This Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is a smart example of a 1980s sports car icon that has been greatly enjoyed by a long-term owner. Powered by a 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-six engine paired with a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels, this Carrera is finished in a desirable colour scheme and has benefited from regular maintenance and some recent restoration work. The result is an eminently usable classic 911 that is in very good order.

First registered on 17 November 1983, the car has been owned by the vendor for just over 10 years, who has enjoyed some 16,000 miles behind the wheel. It has proved to be remarkably reliable during his ownership, with the only mechanical failure in the last decade being down to a faulty starter motor.

The bodywork of this 911 was restored in 2012 by Norfolk Premier Coachworks, which included new sills, kidney bowls, B-pillars, jacking points and both inner and outer wings. Following this, the car was given a partial respray. The work was documented with photographs and there are invoices totalling around £13,000 on file. In 2014, the same body shop removed the bumpers, stripped and repainted them, reassembled them with all new fixtures, and refurbished the Fuchs alloy wheels – all for an additional cost of around £3,000. Earlier in its life, the rear spoiler has evidently been removed.

Today, the car presents very well, with a high gloss to the Guards Red paintwork, though there are some minor imperfections. They include stone chips around the front end and the nearside rear wheel arch, some paint chips to the door handles, and a small area of corrosion around the battery tray. In general though, this Carrera 3.2 presents very smartly indeed. The door jambs and shuts are in great shape, and a pair of aftermarket sill kick plates has been fitted. The 16-inch Fuchs wheels are in excellent condition, with black centres and polished rims.

Moving inside, the cabin features seats from a later Carrera, trimmed in a combination of black leatherette and the Porsche script cloth. An aftermarket Nardi-Personal steering wheel is also fitted. The interior presents well, with only some minor scuffing to plastics and some aging visible on the door cards. The seats are in very good cosmetic order, showing minimal wear. The vendor notes that the electric adjustment for the driver’s seat is not wired in, and that the stereo, electric aerial, and engine compartment light are also not connected. Its oil level gauge also requires a new sender. All of the other electric items work as they should, including the optional sliding sunroof.

The car has a good service history, which is summarised below. The original stamped book records the maintenance from new until 1993, and there is a raft of invoices and receipts from workshops thereafter. A full leak-down test was carried out at around 150,000 miles, which showed the engine to be in good condition.

Most recently, the owner carried out a routine oil change in May 2020. Prior to this, the car received a service at Porsche specialist GT One Ltd at 177,297 miles in August 2018, and more substantial maintenance by GT One in March 2017 at 175,782 miles. The latter was an engine-out service including clutch change, new crankshaft rear main oil seal, new fuel pressure lines, return lines and an oil tank repair. The car also received new brake discs and pads all round, fresh brake fluid, a new torsion bar end plate, new rear anti-roll bar mounting brackets, new bushes, clamps and drop links, new vacuum pipes, a new windscreen washer pump, and an engine oil and filter change.

This car has been gradually improved over time to keep it in good order, with the interior refreshed in previous years, and body restoration completed more recently. One of the next jobs is to renew the exhaust system, which the owner notes is now quite tired. However, he will include replacement heat exchangers, a crossover pipe and pre-silencer with the sale, allowing the new owner to choose their favoured back box and commission the installation.

The most recent MOT test was on 21 February 2020 at 178,944 miles. There were only a few advisories, referencing slight play in the front wheel bearings, a light misting of oil on the rear shock absorbers, and a minor oil leak. The car is wearing Bridgestone S02 tyres, which the vendor notes are still in very good condition with plenty of tread, having covered around 5,000 miles in six years. A semi-fitted Classic Additions indoor car cover will come with the car.

Sold with its original tool roll and tyre inflator, red book wallet and the original stamped service book – not to mention a raft of invoices and old MOT certificates – this 1983 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Sport is a well-cared-for example in a great colour combination that is ready for many more miles with its next owner.
