1982 PORSCHE 924

This Porsche 924 is a charming modern classic, finished in an iconic Porsche colour scheme and appearing to be highly original throughout. It is powered by a 2.0-litre inline-four, producing up to 123bhp, driven through a five-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 104,622 miles.

First registered in February 1982, the service history shows the gradual mileage accrual through the 1980s and 1990s, and by September 2000 the odometer stood at 89,869 miles. Having only covered around 15,000 miles in the last 20 years, it has been kept in good running order, but would now benefit from some cosmetic refurbishment. It has been with the current owner since March 2020.

The exterior presents in good order for a car that is now more than 38 years old, with the body panels finished in the popular Guards Red hue, which retains a pleasing shine all around the car. The correct Porsche script graphics along the flanks are still in place, and it even retains the original rear registration plate from Maltin Car Concessionaires - the supplying dealer in 1982. There are stone chips around the front end as shown in the gallery, and a small patch of corrosion around the offside latch for the rear glass panel.

While the next owner could improve the paintwork if they wish, this is an eminently usable 924. The exterior rubbers and plastics have aged and faded in places, but there is an invoice in the file for some repair work to the offside front corner of the car from Autobody Technic in Berkshire, showing a £1,300 spend on this car’s appearance.

In the cabin, the original interior is very well-preserved. The brown velour pinstripe fabric seat covers have held up remarkably well, though there is now a small hole in the front passenger seat backrest, and another on top of the rear bench seat. Otherwise, the vinyl backings are in good order, and the carpets are also in sound condition. While the dashboard is cracked in multiple places, the vendor will provide a replacement dashboard with the car. A cold-start button has been installed, but the originality of the interior even comes down to the Radiomobile radio and cassette deck. The vendor reports a small hole in the windscreen washer bottle, but otherwise there are no known faults with any of the switchgear or electrics.

The last scheduled maintenance was in October 2020 at KSM Automotive, which included a full service with new spark plugs, ignition leads, replenishing all fluids, and some replacement fuses. The vendor believes it would benefit from a tune-up to ensure it is running as strongly as possible. In February 2018, specialist Porsche Torque in Uxbridge fitted a new ignition coil, as well as a new exhaust downpipe gasket and performed a compression test. In 2017, the same specialist carried out a cam belt replacement at 103,200 miles, and made adjustments to the handbrake. A new fuse box was installed in 2015.

The last MOT test was carried out on 22 July 2019 at 104,425 miles. It passed, but with the MOT tester noting that the battery was insecure, and reporting advisories for a slightly deteriorated fuel cap seal, a minor leak from the exhaust, and noting that the offside outer rear sill panel felt weak - though no holes or corrosion were found. The 185/65 R14 Yokohama Aspec tyres are all reported to be in good condition.

Accompanying the car is a 924 driver’s manual, the original stamped service booklet, and even the user guide for the Radiomobile stereo. The roller luggage cover is still in place, and the spare wheel and tool roll are also present.

This Porsche 924 is a no-frills transaxle sports car, which would be a great basis for further improvement and refurbishment, but which is ultimately ready to drive and enjoy as-is. A period-perfect 1980s coupe; its Guards Red over pinstripe fabric interior gives it a wonderful retro aesthetic, and it is now seeking an enthusiast who appreciates its originality.
