1981 PORSCHE 911 SC

KEY FACTS

  • This Porsche 911 SC was discovered as a ‘garage find’ in 2015 and has been masterfully restored to original specifications, and is now an unmissable opportunity for someone seeking a stunning classic 911.
  • It is powered by a 3.0-litre air-cooled flat six producing 204bhp, coupled to the original 915 five-speed manual transmission.
  • This matching-numbers car was delivered to the UK as a factory right-hand drive car (registered as BAB 246W) and was imported into Australia in 1996.
  • Located in a garage in 2015, having been idle since 2003, it was treated to an extensive, no-expense-spared and fully documented restoration completed in 2020.
  • It is sold with a Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • This particular 911 SC is finished in the wonderful period-perfect colour scheme of Rosewood Metallic over a beige interior with ‘Pasha’ cloth inserts.
  • The engine and transmission are original, but have been fully disassembled and rebuilt.
  • While the restoration was conducted ensuring original specifications were maintained throughout, small improvements were made to the car in deviation from the original. These include LED headlights supplied by Flat 6 Illumination in the US, a new Monty muffler and Pioneer head unit and speakers.
  • Sold with a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche, import approval document from 1996, 1981 drivers manual and maintenance record (replacement), plus 16 pages of invoices and descriptions of the work undertaken by the engine builder.
  • There are also various invoices for work and parts from the late ‘90s, a USB stick with progress photographs of the engine and transmission rebuilds, the original muffler, and spare Pasha fabric and beige vinyl from the interior restoration.

CONDITION

  • Restoration work included disassembly and stripping the shell back to bare metal to be prepared for respray. No rot or damage was found during this process, nor has any arisen since. During reassembly, most of the rubber seals and similar parts were replaced with new OEM parts, including the sunroof, which was disassembled, cleaned, and new cables sourced and installed. Exterior trims, wheels, bumpers and the rear spoiler are all in excellent condition.
  • When the car was discovered it still had its original paint, but that had lost its lustre with time. During the restoration, a fastidious respray was completed in Rosewood Metallic (X7X7) and this has been maintained in stunning condition. There is a small 2mm x 3mm chip on the engine deck lid under the wing, which has been touched in, and a minor blemish on the front valance - both are very discreet and have been documented in the photographs.
  • The interior has been re-trimmed, with the owner sourcing original OEM beige/brown Pasha fabric from Germany (the last known original sample at the time) and factory-delivered OEM 1981 beige vinyl.
  • New carpet was purchased from Lakewell to match the exact original specifications. The work was completed to an exceptional standard, and has been maintained in excellent condition since.
  • Typical of cars of this age, the hydraulic gas struts for the boot and bonnet are in need of replacement, and while the heater works in manual mode, the automatic heater unit has not been connected and its condition is unknown.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • Serviced at 127,241 km by Priority Porsche in April 2021, this was a routine minor service, including fluids, lubrication, oil filter, and idle adjustment. This was the first routine maintenance following the restoration.
  • As part of the mechanical refurbishment, the engine was fully disassembled with both the top and bottom end rebuilt from the ground up to factory specifications by a specialist Porsche engine builder in Adelaide. All key components were purchased new from Porsche (fully documented). The engine has done 2,500 km since the rebuild was completed.
  • The original 915 manual transmission was also disassembled, checked, measured and fully rebuilt by the same specialist.

SUMMARY

The subject of an extensive and fully documented restoration, this 1981 Porsche 911 SC is undoubtedly one of the finest examples its kind. Benefitting from total rebuilds of both the engine and transmission, and with the body beautifully repainted in the striking Rosewood Metalllic hue, this is a period-perfect classic 911 that is now ready for many more miles with its next owner.
