1980 PORSCHE 924 CARRERA GT

KEY FACTS

  • An honestly presented example of the rare homologation special, presented in fair condition but retaining its original engine and transmission.
  • Under the bonnet is the 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four, producing 207bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.
  • This Carrera GT was acquired by the seller approximately 18 months ago.

EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

  • Created to homologate the 924 for Group 4 competition requirements (though the cars ultimately raced under the GTP category at Le Mans in 1980), the Carrera GT uses a modified version of the engine from the Porsche 924 Turbo, featuring a top-mounted intercooler, a digital ignition system and a higher compression ratio.
  • The model also features a number of unique cosmetic enhancements, including dramatically flared wheel arches, a larger rear spoiler and the Carrera GT’s signature bonnet scoop, as well as a lower ride height, courtesy of a sportier suspension setup with Bilstein dampers.
  • Finished in Indischrot (Guards Red), this example is trimmed with black fabric upholstery with red pinstripes and matching piping, and was specified with 15-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, a sunroof and a rear wiper.
  • The rear wheel arch flares were replaced when the car was resprayed, and it has an aftermarket exhaust system, though this is a close match for the original system in terms of both looks and sound.
  • The car will be accompanied by documentation of its service history over the last 20 years, as well as its original driver’s manual, its Certificate of Production and an original Porsche factory workshop manual for the 924 Turbo and 924 Carrera GT models.

CONDITION

  • The bodywork has previously been repaired due to damage on one of the doors. It has also evidently suffered from an impact on its front passenger-side corner, where the wing, nose panel and bumper are damaged and are no longer properly aligned.
  • Fully resprayed in its original hue of Indischrot (Guards Red) in 2005, the paintwork is in fair shape, though there are signs of damage on the passenger-side front wing and front bumper, with various scuffs, cracks and chips to the finish, as well as some general age-related stone chips on the car’s nose and further damage on the lower driver’s-side of the front bumper.
  • All four alloy wheels are in good order.
  • Inside, the black vinyl and cloth-trimmed interior is in impressive condition given the car’s age and mileage. As is to be expected, there are some general signs of use throughout, with scuffs and loose stitching on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, as well as damage on the driver’s seat’s backrest and wear on the base of the passenger seat.
  • The seller notes that the indicators and the fuel gauge only work occasionally, so will require some attention. Otherwise there are no known electrical faults.
  • This 924 Carrera GT’s last roadworthiness inspection was conducted in July 2019 at 70,887 miles. Noted advisories included play in the nearside front steering rack joints, some corrosion on the the front brake pipes, an oil leak from the front of the engine, corrosion on the nearside rear section of the floor, and slight damage to the nearside front seatbelt’s webbing.

SERVICE HISTORY

  • This rare modern classic’s most recent routine maintenance was carried out in December 2016 at 67,988 miles by Porsche specialist Auto2000, who changed the engine oil and oil filter, as well as performing a full inspection of the car’s mechanical components.
  • Prior to this, the engine oil and filter were changed in October 2015, and a service was carried out in September 2014.
  • The cam belt was replaced in May 2011 at 57,170 miles.

SUMMARY

Described by Evo magazine as “the ultimate 924”, the Porsche 924 Carrera GT is a rare and engaging driver-focused sports car. While this example would no doubt benefit from a full service and some attention to its bodywork and paint, it could be a rewarding project for an enthusiast to bring back up to a very good standard.
